When asked whether he plans to extend the 10% global tariffs indefinitely, Donald Trump seemed to completely ignore the framework of Section 122 of the 1974 Trade Act – which he’s using to implement the duties.
“We have a right to do pretty much what we want to do,” he said, ignoring the statute’s requirement for the administration to receive congressional approval for tariffs beyond 150 days.

The president called the decision “deeply disappointing” and said he was “ashamed” of the justices who ruled against his use of IEEPA. He hurled insults at them while speaking to reporters, calling them “fools and lap dogs”, “very unpatriotic and disloyal to our constitution” and even made baseless claims that they were being swayed by “foreign interests”.
And then Trump announces new tariffs he knows they are illegal.

Two newspapers knew, but not the Congress.

The NY Times reports that Trump presented Maduro with an ultimatum in December, telling him to leave office and go into exile in Turkey. Maduro refused.
Then, Maduro went back onstage this week, dancing to an electronic song that said “no crazy war”.
Maduro’s “regular public dancing and other displays of nonchalance in recent weeks helped persuade some on the Trump team that the Venezuelan president was mocking them and trying to call what he believed to be a bluff”.

Sen. Kim accused Trump of rejected a “constitutionally required approval process for armed conflict because the Administration knows the American people reject risks pulling our nation into another war.” Kim said the overnight strikes in Venezuela “doesn’t represent strength. It’s not sound foreign policy. It puts Americans at risk in Venezuela and the region, and it sends a horrible and disturbing signal that targeting a head of state is an acceptable policy.”

Reports coming through now from vice-president Delcy Rodríguez that contrast sharply from the portrayal given by Donald Trump.
Trump said he understood she’d be sworn in as president of Venezuela, and that she had agreed to cooperate with the US because she had no “choice”.
Now Rodríguez has appeared on state television, saying that Maduro “is Venezuela’s only president”. She described Maduro as having been kidnapped and called for him and his wife to be freed.
