Got USB-C - USB-C networking going between two of my snapdragon laptops in the early hours; it took some DT tweaks to persuade the ports to work in device mode; but then loading g_ncm and it came up nicely.
Hitting 2.72 Gbps which is hmm, low - but it was pegging a CPU, I'm not sure what usb-usb networking is supposed to be able to get.
`compinit` caching and lazy-loading increased my startup time by a factor of 5x! 🚀

Abstract: Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) models are attractive for edge deployment because they provide high model capacity while activating only a small subset of parameters per token, improving compute efficiency. However, MoE inference at the edge is fundamentally limited by memory. Expert parameters are large and often reside in off-chip memory due to capacity, cost, and power constraints, putting expert loading to the critical path. We present APEX: Adaptive Expert Prefetching, a predictive resource management framework that overlaps expert loading with useful computation. APEX introduces a lightweight prefetch router that predicts candidate experts before the attention block to dynamically fetch additional experts using a learned confidence model. This adaptive strategy achieves over 99% overlap accuracy, significantly outperforming fixed top-k prefetching techniques. APEX supports two execution modes: a correctness-preserving mode that guarantees exact routing semantics, and a stall-free mode that eliminates residual stalls by operating on available experts with negligible impact on application accuracy. Across multiple MoE models, the correctness-preserving mode reduces per-token latency by up to 26% and improves energy-delay product (EDP) by up to 41% over state-of-the-art baselines, while the stall-free mode provides additional efficiency gains with negligible impact on application accuracy. These results establish adaptive, confidence-driven expert prefetching as an effective approach for efficient MoE inference on edge systems.

Abstract: Cyclic pore-pressure or normal stress variations arise both in relation to natural earthquakes and in engineered subsurface systems, yet their effect on fault stability remains poorly constrained at the grain scale. Here we numerically model, using a coupled Discrete Element--fluid dynamics model, the response of a sheared, fluid-saturated or dry, gouge-filled fault to effective normal stress oscillations over a wide frequency range (0.5-10000 Hz). The effective normal stress is oscillated either by cycling the pore-pressure or by directly cycling the normal stress, while keeping the stress state below the Mohr-Coulomb threshold measured in continuous loading. Despite this sub-critical loading, we observe failure across most frequencies, with a non-monotonic frequency dependence. A distinct non-failure window emerges at intermediate frequencies (30-200 Hz), bounded by failure at both lower and higher frequencies; the system exhibits four regimes from cyclic failure-and-arrest to continuous sliding. Pore-pressure and normal stress oscillations produce the same regime structure, confirming that they act as equivalent forcings via Terzaghi's principle, with fluid coupling adding only a delay due to dilatant hardening. Sub-critical failure arises from dilation-induced strength deterioration via two mechanisms: (i) low-frequency cycles allow sufficient time for shear-driven ratcheting dilation, while (ii) high-frequency cycles induce dynamic dilation (acoustic fluidization) via amplified seepage forces, stress gradients and inertial forces. The intermediate non-failure window represents the gap between these mechanisms. These results identify frequency as a controlling parameter for failure in granular materials, with implications for dynamic earthquake triggering and cyclic injection protocols.

BBC Master 512 in DOS Plus; GEM, Turbo Pascal ( the 6502 Welcome panel). The video on the Master 512 is a bit odd - it's not got enough VRAM to be able to do normal PC modes, and it's not got the character gen to do hardware text (except teletext which is no use to the PC side). It was DOS Plus not MSDOS so some stuff was touchy. Hmm only thing I'm missing is the mouse, it might be in the loft somewhere.

Abstract: LLM serving is increasingly constrained by memory capacity as model weights, KV caches, and the number of served model variants continue to grow. This report examines High-Bandwidth Flash (HBF) as a capacity-oriented extension to HBM-based serving systems. We first discuss how HBF can be integrated into the GPU memory hierarchy without undermining the bandwidth expected by the compute die. We then model the system-level value of added capacity as expanded residency for read-mostly model-state objects. Under this view, HBF can improve MoE serving by enabling more expert replicas and can improve multi-model serving by reducing model loading and supporting hot-model replication. Our simulation results show that these benefits depend on preserving the HBM-resident execution path while using HBF to expand the resident set of model weights.

Abstract: A common way for attackers to compromise victim systems is hijacking sensitive operations (e.g., control-flow transfers) with attacker-controlled inputs. Existing solutions in general only protect parts of these targets and have high performance overheads, which are impractical and hard to deploy on systems with limited resources (e.g., IoT devices) or for low-level software like kernels and bare-metal firmware. In this paper, we present a lightweight hardware-software co-design solution ROLoad-PMP to protect sensitive operations from being hijacked for low-level software. First, we propose new instructions, which only load data from read-only memory regions with specific keys, to guarantee the integrity of pointees pointed by (potentially corrupted) data pointers. Then, we provide a program hardening mechanism to protect sensitive operations, by classifying and placing their operands into read-only memory with different keys at compile-time and loading them with ROLoad-PMP-family instructions at runtime. We have implemented an FPGA-based prototype of ROLoad-PMP based on RISC-V, and demonstrated an important defense application, i.e., forward-edge control-flow integrity. Results showed that ROLoad-PMP only costs few extra hardware resources (< 1.40%). Moreover, it enables many lightweight (e.g., with negligible overheads < 0.853%) defenses, and provides broader and stronger security guarantees than existing hardware solutions, e.g., ARM BTI and Intel CET.

My Cumana disc drives seem to be working again; booted a few different disks on them. Alas the llayama 19" I'm using on my model B doesn't like the Acornsoft games modes; it works fine to the intros and is fine in all modes if I try them on other stuff. Hmm.

Abstract: This work couples a high-order flux reconstruction/correction procedure via reconstruction (FR/CPR) solver with a rotating actuator-line model (ALM) to simulate rotating-blade aerodynamics on fixed Cartesian grids. Blade loading is represented by volumetric body force source terms projected through an isotropic Gaussian kernel in a blade-attached frame, eliminating the need to resolve blade geometry. Vertical-axis wind turbines (VAWTs) serve as the demonstration configuration, with a modified Boeing-Vertol dynamic stall model incorporated to capture unsteady lift and drag. A mesh-resolution criterion for the Gaussian projection kernel on reasonably coarse meshes is derived. It shows that cost-effective coarse meshes can operate in a mesh-controlled regime with negligible induction feedback, motivating a Double Multiple Streamtube (DMST) correction to recover the physical inflow. Simulations are carried out over a range of tip-speed ratios at a chord-based Reynolds number of Re_c ~ 3.6 x 10^5. The framework is validated against experimental near-wake measurements and previously reported LES-ALM results, and the mean wake profile shows good agreement. The predicted power-coefficient curve matches high-fidelity three-dimensional LES-ALM data to within 6% around the optimal VAWT operation conditions. The framework also captures the regime-dependent influence of dynamic stall, azimuthal blade loading, lift hysteresis, and characteristic wake structures. These results demonstrate that the FR/CPR-ALM framework provides an accurate and computationally efficient geometry-free approach for VAWT analysis, making it well suited for parametric studies and large-scale wind energy applications.

Do we have any nextcloud-like webUIs but that work for filesystem folders and stuff?
Nextcloud is really bad at loading external libraries, specially those with large amounts of files, and I use it only with external libraries. Plus, it's quite annoying to maintain since I need ro run nextcloud-occ commands every update. I just want something that lets me upload, download move files around and stuff, I don't really use most of other nextcloud features (precisely because of too much lock-in). Plus working well on mobile devices so I can upload stuff from my phone. Having the ability to integrate with Collabora/LibreOffice Online would be great, but I was never able to get that or OnlyOffice to work anyway.

Abstract: This work develops a cavitation-consistent acoustic perturbation framework for predicting sound generation and propagation in cavitating flows. Unlike conventional acoustic perturbation equations for single-phase or weakly compressible flows, the proposed formulation embeds cavitation physics directly into the acoustic equations. The cavitation acoustic perturbation equations (CAPE) incorporate vapor mass transfer, mixture compressibility, and pressure-rate effects within a unified formulation, allowing cavitation-induced noise sources to be resolved in the computational domain. The numerical framework is verified using one-dimensional wave-propagation problems. The solutions become insensitive to further mesh and time-step refinement, the perfectly matched layer suppresses boundary reflections, and the predicted attenuation over a range of source frequencies follows Stokes' sound attenuation law. The framework is then applied to cavitating flow past a circular cylinder and a NACA hydrofoil. The non-cavitating benchmark shows dipole-like radiation associated with unsteady loading, whereas cavitating cases exhibit monopole-like or geometry-modulated radiation caused by volumetric phase change. Source-term analyses identify tonal frequencies associated with vortex shedding, cavity shedding, and collapse-induced excitation. The phase-change terms provide a direct volumetric contribution to the monopole-like source, while localized collapse events appear through amplification of the pressure-rate source. The proposed framework extends acoustic perturbation methods to cavitating multiphase flows and provides an efficient tool for hydroacoustic prediction, source localization, and mechanism analysis in marine and hydraulic applications.

This is the second time it's become unusable.
The culprit? the same as the last time...she has an ungodly amount of emails open in tabs and it just crashes. Troubleshoot mode seems to get by that to let me 'Close Other Tabs' on a tab.
Boggles my mind it doesn't have some way to 'open clean' without loading the open emails...or at least a setting.
