Random #Gentoo ebuild hint: while you technically don't have to put Hypothesis in EPYTEST_PLUGINS (i.e. most of the packages will work without loading the plugin), moving it there ensures that the Gentoo profile is selected. This disables the health checks that can randomly break tests when they don't meet Hypothesis quality standards.

Abstract: Efficient loading of single atoms into tightly confined traps is crucial for advancing quantum information processing and exploring atom-photon interactions. However, directly loading atoms from a magneto-optical trap (MOT) into static tweezers in cavity-based systems and hybrid atom-photon interfaces remains a challenge. Here, we demonstrate atom loading in a tightly confined optical tweezer 0.6mm away from MOT by an optical conveyor belt. By employing real-time feedback control of the atom number in the overlapping region between the conveyor belt and the tweezer, we enhance a single-atom loading probability to 77.6%. Our technique offers a versatile solution for deterministic single-atom loading in various experimental settings and paves the way for diverse applications based on hybrid photonic-atom structures.

I had a drive fail in an array today. We have 'next day' replacement parts. Neat. Our loading dock is open between 7am and 3pm. "The part should arrive at the designated destination at approximately 06/30/2025 08:02 PM." Umm... thanks for speedy service but no one is at the office at 8pm. Yeesh logistics, do better.

I guess we had a little bit of water come in through a loading dock door at work. It soaked a box full of Cat5 cable, not too bad. It's a good thing I moved a UPS off the floor where it was and onto a small rolling dolly a few months ago.
Also, USB-C is great because you can plug a cable into two different ports of a USB hub! Looks like it destroyed the cable and the hub. (Not sure who did it but people were trying to help while I was out.)
Anyway, all is up and running again…

PSA: We had some image loading issues since yesterday on datasci.social, soon to be resolved by itself. Thx for understanding.
Reason: Due to migrating to a more stable provider: An additional cache for images was added that also stores the data in an efficient manner, but due to the large initial load some of its requests are timing out to the backend. We are increasing the timeouts, and also manually pushing data into it so it has data before the initial request.

systemd definitely does get many things right. My current favorite is how it sets the system resolver to loopback and provides an own DNS server.
Common Linux tradition was to tell processes to use getaddrinfo, where nsswitch then provides configurable backends. That means that every process goes through loading /etc/nsswitch.conf, but worse, it reduces DNS to a terrible subset. Query SVCB records? tough luck, you're on your own.

Abstract: We propose a scheme to transfer molecules from a slow beam into an optical trap using only a single photon absorption and emission cycle. The efficiency of such a scheme is numerically explored for BaF using realistic experimental parameters. The technique makes use of the state-dependent potential in an external electric field to trap molecules from an initial velocity of order 10m/s. A rapid optical transition at the point where the molecules come to a standstill in the electric field potential irreversibly transfers them into a ~7mK optical dipole trap. For a pulsed Stark decelerated beam, we estimated the per-shot efficiency to be ~0.04% or up to ~103 molecules, with a potential factor 20 improvement when the fields are synchronously modulated with the arriving velocity components. The irreversibility of the scheme allows for larger numbers to be built up over time. Since this scheme does not rely on a closed cycling transition for laser cooling, it broadens the range of molecules that can be used for research on cold molecular chemistry, quantum information, and fundamental interactions in optical traps.
