Hans Rößlers „Neuendettelsau unterm Hakenkreuz“ stand schon lange auf meiner Leseliste. Ein Hörbuch gab es nicht, also habe ich eins gemacht, komplett lokal auf einem Mac mini M4 mit (nur) 16 GB RAM.
Gesprochen hat Qwen3-TTS mit einer Stimme aus wenigen Sekunden Thorsten-Voice, Whisper hat jeden Abschnitt gegengehört. Fehler wurden neu gesprochen. Nach einer Nacht Rechenzeit waren 6,5 Stunden Hörbuch fertig. Ich bin begeistert!

Updated MorphOS from 3.18 to 3.20 on my G4 Mac Mini. Since the cd drive doesn’t work, I always have to dig out the secret open firmware incantation and instructions to myself. I wish the team would keep it on the official homepage, because the aging hardware is quite likely to have issues like this. As a particularly fun challenge, my remaining monitor with DVI didn’t like the OF resolution, so I had to enter " boot hd:,"(5C)boot.img bi=dh1:morphos.iso" evaluate without being …

I pre-ordered a M6 Mac Mini with 32 GB of memory (and thought "that was a lot of money but the market is going to be shit for a few more years"), realized that I really need Thunderbolt 5 (the M6 Mac Mini does not have that) because I am interested in using Remote Direct Memory Access, canceled the M6 Mac Mini pre-order, and pre-ordered a M5 Pro Mac Mini with 64 GB. So, now I have spent 2x "a lot of money". Why didn't I get a laptop instead? That would be 3x "a lot of money". 😆

I've been having some problems with the disk storage for my Plex server (Mac Mini M2). I was using 4 external drives (no space for internal) and running MacOS RAID 1 in two arrays. The RAID rebuild trigger and rebuild time was becoming problematic. If one drive connected after another, it triggered a rebuild.
I'll solve this!
Bought a USB-C enclosure that has hardware RAID. No more issues with RAID rebuilds for no reason!
But...
MacOS apparently no longer …

It seems the 27.2 public beta is being a bad boy on my M4 Pro Mac Mini. I tried it again, as I thought it might just be a glitch with the upgrade, but it ended up the same - an endless login loop. Reported to Apple. Has anyone else with a similar Mac had issues like this?

My Mac Mini decided to act up. The Roon server wouldn’t start, so I did my usual routine. After some simple checks, I rebooted. That’s when the trouble started, and it got stuck in a never-ending login loop. In the end, I wiped the drive, did a full reinstall, and then Time Machine did the rest.

... This summer, I got a good deal on a m3-based iPad Air and I have been working on building a workflow using Textastic, a VPN, and a VPS (sitting in a data center). I want to plug this Mac Mini into that and see what I can do.

A buddy of mine drove in from Mequon to hang out and try to prove that Claude Code is more performant than the 100% local AI that I set up on the new Mac Mini. I don't think that he understood "and? I don't need it to be fast?" 😏

Is er qua prijs/prestatie verhouding wel iets wat in de buurt komt van een Mac Mini M6 (bijv 24GB voor €1500) voor het lokaal draaien en experimenteren met AI modellen, in de zin van Windows/Linux systemen, nog niet veel tegengekomen ? 🤔 Maar suggesties zijn welkom!
