A new study led by the Spanish National Centre for Cardiovascular Research (CNIC) and funded by the European Reasearch Council (ERC) has identified imidazole propionate (ImP), a metabolite produced by gut bacteria, as a driver of atherosclerosis— as a driver of atherosclerosis, the disease behind most heart attacks and strokes. Published in Nature, the findings point to blood levels of ImP as a potential early diagnostic marker, and pave the way for novel, personalised treatment strategies.
