@ruth_mottram@fediscience.orgI realise on the fediverse this is maybe asking for a flaming, but yesterday out of sheer curiosity I tried Claude for a simpleish coding task that I'd been putting off (largely inspired by @… 's latest on #theclimatebrink). The performance of Claude was seriously impressive. I am convinced the AI cycle is more than hype (and have been for a while), the chatbots have been a huge attention hogger, misleadingly so, while the serious work has been done elsewhere. (We are developing ML tools to supplement parts of our climate model workflows).
Now I'm wondering if there is any serious EU competition to Anthropic? - Mistral's codestral perhaps?
Because this kind of performance changes everything and we can't afford to lag behind...

- OpenAI is actively evil. There's no morals or anything. Just scamers trying anything to amass power and money
- Anthropic is has sniffed so much of its own farts that most of what they are doing is just writing fan fiction for their own models. They are not evil as much as they just need psychological help

@hacksilon@infosec.exchangeYesterday I tried out Mistral OCR and… wow. I didn’t know that OCR of PDFs with complex layouts, tables, images and everything is basically a solved problem now? Will likely have it run OCR on a 250 page PDF to extract the full text and tables soon, at a cost of roughly 25 cents, if I read the pricing grid correctly. The initial test on a few representative pages was very promising. Next step is to give it a few pages of my terrible handwriting and see what happens 😅.
