Today is the federal holiday that honors Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
He was born January 15, 1929.
He was assassinated April 4, 1968, at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee.
He was just 39 years old.
While Dr. King is primarily remembered as a civil rights leader,
he also championed the cause of the poor and organized the Poor People’s Campaign
to address issues of economic justice.
Dr. King was also a fierce critic of U.S. foreign policy an…

Exactly one year before Dr King was assassinated, on 4 April 1967,
he gave his famous “Beyond Vietnam” speech at Riverside church in New York City.
More than 3,000 people were in attendance.
At the time, King had come under intense fire for having renounced the Vietnam war;
his outspokenness put him at odds with Lyndon Johnson,
who felt King should have been indebted to him for his efforts in pushing through civil rights legislation.
It also put King at …

My Traditional MLK Day post:

Video clip from “Boondocks” with a white, balding man in a suit sitting in a chair, with a light skinned woman partially in frame on his right, he is saying:
“If Martin Luther King was alive today, he would-“
*he is hit by a thrown folding chair, knocking him on his back*
*A young Black child (Huey Freeman) with long natural hair, wearing a t-shirt and pants runs on screen with his fist raised and starts beating him*
*picture cuts to “Please Stand By” multicolor test pattern

Today, I attended service at a Unitarian Universalist congregation, and my soul is energized. There are a lot of people that want to make this world a better place. If you are feeling alone out there in a world of hate, there are those that side with love.
Today was especially powerful as a woman of color that marched with MLK Jr. read to the multi-colored children of the congregation a book of his speech. She choked up reading his words as my own tears ran freely.
"I have…

There are 3 fundamental freedoms outlined in Dawn of Everything:
(1) the freedom to move away or relocate from one’s surroundings;
(2) the freedom to ignore or disobey commands issued by others; and
(3) the freedom to shape entirely new social realities, or shift back and forth between different ones.
I think these can all be captured in one statement when reframed as a system constraint: for a system to be free, participation must be optional for all members.
People must be part of *some* system. Even individualistic survivalism is itself a system (if not a very good one). Then there is a corollary as well: any system that is not free, that is not optional, can turn optional systems into mandatory ones, and thus (adopted from the MLK quote) un-freedom anywhere is a threat to freedom everywhere.
Edit:
I'm gonna drop the #Philosophy tag on here because apparently that's where I went with it. Challenges and push-back welcome.

Trump is just the worst!
The National Park Service is reshuffling its free-admission schedule
so that visitors get in free on Donald Trump’s birthday next year,
while Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Juneteenth (previously free days) will now require regular entrance fees.
