When interfacing with a #Meshtastic device (at for least *some of* my devices), [USB] Serial seems to be many orders of magnitude more reliable than TCP over WiFi.
Just finished "The Daughters of Ys", a graphic novel written by M.T. Anderson and illustrated by Jo Rioux. Is apparently a telling on an ancient Breton legend, which explains some of the narrative devices and plot choices. The drawings are beautiful and the tale is interesting, but takes a royalty-focused and -friendly perspective I've grown unfond of at this stage in my life.

I was violently snatched on March 21, 2023, from the outskirts of Baghdad, where I had been conducting fieldwork for my Ph.D. at Princeton University.
When my kidnappers delivered me to my cell, they cut the restraints they’d placed around my arms and legs, and lifted the cloth bag off my head.
The secret prison where I was brought was run by Kataib Hezbollah, an Iraqi militia backed by Iran.
Four men searched my mouth for implanted tracking devices.
I had told them I …

I always wondered how thermo-driven radiator knobs could turn the valve around. I know now. I need 5 extra radiator pieces for my 5 smart radiator devices. Sigh, why did I not get that memo?
With travel and parties for holidays coming up, it's a good time to backup your devices, just in case they're lost/damaged/stolen.
This reminder is brought to you via an unlikely car explosion in a carpark also taking out my brother's car and laptop

My batteries are always low after a long day of work.
No, not emotionally. The devices I work with just take up all my USB ports, leaving my phone empty.

So, my curiosity got the best of me and I ordered a SuperStation One. Looks pretty awesome and supports all the cores my MiSTer does which is very interesting. Has analog output which was a requirement...not really sure there are any real downsides.

The tv at this tire Shoppe is set to local network affiliate.
Holy crap is tv Morning Show insipid meaningless crap. Like my brain wants to escape. Beautiful perky hosts, with big dad joke rizz, showing tiktok videos in between massively distilled news pieces that are so meatless they're vegan.
The meteorologist is the least flake, they actually have a post-sec degree.
Ok thank for mobile devices, I can choose my own brain rot.

In keeping with a brief return to my telecom/cable/satellite/media analysis roots, my latest piece commissioned by TechTarget takes a look at how AI is being integrated into 5G, mostly to push more compute power down to more devices.
Many thanks to Scott Lawrence of Verizon Business, Joe Madden of Mobile Experts, and the utterly delightful Ray Liu of Origin AI for their insights.
Been giving Home Assistant another try. It’s ok I guess.
Probsbly not a common problem but there really is no good solutions that I could find for managing multiple locations from a single instance or even some kind of federated view or something.
Integrating Choria Switch and Metric abstractions into it So I can pull in sensor stats and interact with heaters etc - but let Choria keep autonomously own the devices.
(Also a updated picture of my Pi case for sensors)
Does having contacts without photos bother you? It just looks all weird in my contacts list across my devices 🤔
For some reason, my home server was using the "performance" CPU scaling governor. Changing it to "conservative" seems to have lowered power consumption for the whole machine by almost 10%. This saves more than 25€ per year in electricity cost.
You can check your own CPU scaling governor with `cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu*/cpufreq/scaling_governor`.
Surprise find on the bottom of my box of audio cables. I’ve probably never used it… I don’t have any #MIDI devices around, but it’s still recognized by macOS, so I guess it works, even though the package says it requires a “PowerPC G3 CPU with 233 MHz or higher clock speed.”

I have decided that running openSUSE on my pi5 is prima facie consistent with my policy and efforts to move my devices over to the distro, but ultimately inconsistent with the underlying motivation of reducing the amount of fucking-around I have to suffer to keep my grex functioning. Debian Just Works on the Pi series, while openSUSE functions, but does so balanced on a stack of compromises. Better to leave well enough alone while it's well enough.
'nut' is a UPS monitor program; you can configure your host to switch off when your UPS is running low and change settings on the UPS and monitor charge. The 'N' stands for Network - so you can do a lot of things remotely, for example making a bunch of machines speak to one host monitoring the UPS and get them all to shut down.
I also use some of my own scripts to feed it into some graphing stuff with Grafana and get pretty line voltage graphs;
Fuck, no, Apple. I was forced to update to iOS 26 due to lack of security updates for 18 on devices that can run 26 (i.e., due to extortion) but you’re not infecting my Mac with Liquid Ass.
Notice the dark pattern of pestering you in hopes you will accidentally hit the “Restart” button even though you’ve specifically turned off auto updates. Microsoft-level disrespect for consent here.
(Not surprising from a company that gives golden awards to fascists.)
iOS 26 made me use my devices less, it might be a good thing that Liquid Glass is such a piece of shit
Future Plans:
I have like ten years of data in my log, converted from those prior prototypes. I will be adding ways to more usefully compare and analyse data going this far back.
It could maybe use a milestone function, to track singular events which don't take actual time so don't spread on the grid. Snack tracking and the like.
It could likely use a flashcard system, with spaced repetition to review the flashcards, for better memory and recall.
Synching between devices might be nice, and lots will suggest doing that through Nostr, but Nostr is a bit public. Would need an encryption layer. Do nostr relays want to relay encrypted data from one user to themselves I suspect Veilid ( https://veilid.com/ ) would be a better option. The "no servers" ethos probably includes nostr relays.
Mostly I plan just more and better ways to view the ten years and growing of data I already have. And to do some other things for a bit so my log isn't just full of "Vibecoding Exocortex" like it is the last two weeks 😉
After months of not using it, I dusted off my Matrix account thanks to the room created by @… and I encountered a problem due to a loop that prevented me from completing the verification of some devices. Although I solved it, it is certainly not an app suitable for non-techies.
I guess Matrix isn't designed for them, to begin with. However, maybe there…
Some new-year social media thoughts, inspired by @…:
Unfortunately I couldn't stick to desktop-only social media during my winter break 🤦🏼♂️ I'm going to keep trying that.
I'm also going to block bsky.app on all my devices, in favor of browsing both Bsky and Mastodon with Openvibe.
For me at least 2 HDMI ports, 2 USB-C, headphone jack and at least three other USB ports. I have a USB hub for my one Windows 10 laptop as I have multiple devices (scanners, printer, keyboard, mouse and a couple for USB sticks and my external drives). You want to cheap out on ports then I close the tab when I check out your product and go to the competition.

@… @… I primarily use Vivaldi, which is quite customizable and offers a way to sync bookmarks, etc. with other devices using Vivaldi. (My OS is Mint.)
I've installed #Aqara "smart" switch, and it turned out to be useless: it doesn't work when my wifi is down.
The whole point of a physical switch was to have a backup for the flaky connectivity, but nope. Aqara switch locks up and stops responding, just like the rest of the not-actually-smart devices ;(
I'm usually donating to OpenSource software when I install it. Now that I switched from OneNote to Joplin, I installed it on 3 devices. - To be consequent, I now have to donate 3x my regular amount. 🤔
Lockdown Mode is a backstop for people who either do dangerous things or are specifically targeted by high-resource threat actors. Almost no one can *actually* benefit from it but people who need it really need it.
I don’t need it. However, I have it enabled in part to understand what it does to the UX. It interferes with a minority of sites. It forces me to think about whether I REALLY trust the site I’m interacting with & how valuable my interaction really is.

This is about glucagon rescue devices.
Endo told me I need to get one. Said there are two groups especially in need of them. Young children and elderly. Said not to hurt my feelings but I am solidly in the second group.
Wow that is some expensive stuff! Debating if I really need it or not. Been able to handle lows myself for over 50 yea…
I assume it is time to learn how to file bugs for Apple. My recent experience synchronizing Apple Notes, Journal, Reminders, and now Calendar across devices seems to get worse.
I could imagine some extra complexity handling Notes and Journal.
I cannot imagine how Apple hasn’t figured out a fast, reliable, and consistent sync for Reminders and Calendar.
It’s an extremely frustrating experience. I am wondering why there isn’t an AppleSynchGate yet.
Check out my latest CSO piece, which provides the key takeaways from the 2026 NDAA compromise bill released earlier this week, chief among which are provisions that protect the mobile communications of top brass and requirements to safeguard AI systems from digital threats.
