The first year without Kevin
One big difference is that I no longer feel strong. I used to think of my body as sturdy, trustworthy, capable of rising above the niggling health issues most people my age face. But since my husband died, that has changed. I get breathless for no reason. I tire easily. I tremble a lot, I ache. Occasionally, I have a panic attack. I’m embarrassed, because grief has aged me so much.

A week is never enough, but it was the best week ever. I’ll see you in 4 months. I am crying as I type this. Probably the most I’ve ever cried in my life.

When I was 5 or 6, I asked Santa for a record player. He brought me one from Sears (it had a lid & carrying handle like a little suitcase) & a single record: a 45 of Diana Ross/The Supremes’ Love Child. I laugh every time I think about it.
