Princeton, BP, and a sad but extremely revealing chapter in the climate fight
"...a paper by two Princeton professors, Robert Socolow and Stephen Pacala, from the summer of 2004, 22 years ago. A two-decade-old academic paper does not seem all that crucial—but it played a huge role in setting the terms of the climate and energy debate, one that endures to this day. And it illustrates exactly how wasteful much of our current federal effort has become. So—even though it’s infuriating…

Interesting to see that in Maine, several thousand signatures to qualify an anti-trans ballot measure are getting thrown out because the circulators gathered signatures illegally.
It is really common for corporate and billionaire funded measures here in SF to be qualified through paid canvassers who lie about what the measure does or illegally offer payment to sign. Not aware of anyone attempting enforcement though.

Trump is pushing for ending the filibuster in the Senate
Right now, Republicans have 53 votes.
That’s not close to what they’d need to pass Trump’s controversial
"Save America Act", which would mandate strict ID laws for voting and proof of citizenship to register to vote or after a name change.
All Democrats oppose this legislation.
So even though it passed the Republican-controlled House, it’s stuck in the Republican-controlled Senate because of t…

Not since the days of Colonial Pipeline and SolarWinds have I felt the need to write a special report for Metacurity.
But the intense level of activity on Friday and over the weekend surrounding the White House crackdown on Anthropic and its impact on cybersecurity prompted me to write a special Metacurity report this morning. The report presents a timeline of how we have arrived at the first major clash between frontier AI cyber capabilities and government authority.
I hope you …

In other words, we as a campus community have an active debate about which debates are even worth having — and we have room to exercise judgement about which voices we as a community choose to amplify.
Amplifying all voices is not a route to free society; it’s a route to total noise. Flooding the zone is just as effective a means of censorship as silencing all opposition. As people trying to foster useful discussion, we have an obligation to choose choose wisely our topics of discussion and the voices we elevate.

"Neutrality" doesn't exist. You cannot NOT take sides. If you avoid taking sides, you already chose the side of oppressors.

All over the world, but different everywhere, there are obstacles to open debate and the free exchange of ideas. There are blocks, surveillance, identification requirement and legal or social consequences. Self-censorship out of fear is an even bigger dampener than direct censorship. Mullvad helps people everywhere to avoid these obstacles. Many of these people are heroes. Others are the opposite. Some will say and do things using Mullvad that others think are despicable. "The SFMTA announced last month that it would significantly reduce the 1.1 miles of [Ocean Ave] red [transit-only] lanes to a handful of blocks"
Okay, hold it right there. That's a cut-and-dried violation of our city charter's Transit First policy, repeatedly reaffirmed by voters. This should not be a debate because we already had the debate. The "don't prioritize transit" side lost. Transit supporters need to sue the city.

"this goes far beyond mere censorship. It is an open and ongoing assault on liberal democracy itself. Because a society that cannot honestly debate government policy – be it domestic or foreign – cannot meaningfully govern itself. A society that punishes dissent on one issue only emboldens those authoritarians who want to crack down on every issue. The speech restrictions justified against one group are always, inevitably, ultimately, applied to other groups"

Tell the city administrator that infrastructure co-ordination is NOT optional and there will be one group responsible, no discussion, no debate, here is your order. That group checks with the departments, province and utilities on what is coming up for the next 12 to 18 months. Also, if there is an emergency they are consulted so that ALL parties are informed.

Content warning: UKPol kids banned

OBrien on the radio thinks that its okay to ban kids from Youtube even though their exam revision videos are on youtube, because the revision videos will just end up somewhere else.
He thinks though that the suicide encouragement and terrible anorexia mutual support will not simply end up somewhere else I guess. 🤷‍♂️
"No downside to this at all" he reckons. 🤣
"Nobody sensible can be against this ban"
This is what irks me most. The absolute refusal to see any issues at all in the ban. Just refusing to understand that there's any support help or encouragement for kids on these forums. That they are only places for radicalisation and bullying.
TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram, YouTube, Reddit, Twitch, X, Threads, Facebook and Kick.
I note that Bluesky didn't make the blacklist. I expect it'll be added during debate. Can't list everything though, so the kids will surely just go to whoever isn't listed? 4-chan seems to not be included? What a strange list.
I don't use any of them besides Youtube so won't be forced into ID checks for them myself. My youtube account is itself over 18 years old so don't think they'll ask.
