Alex Ramirez Gonzalez and Yan Vazquez Hidalgo were detained by ICE in October and have been held at the Batavia federal detention center since. They came to the U.S. in 2022 to seek refuge from their home country of Cuba. Earlier this week, Ramirez Gonzalez’s claim seeking asylum in the United States was denied, and he now will be deported to Ecuador to pursue residence there despite having no family or connection to the country.
