Why does this shit make it into mass media as if it is anything to take seriously?
This is on exactly on the same level as Mayan-calendar apocalypse stuff.
Not only is it complete bullshit, it also takes away time and space from the actual issues with "AI", like widespread theft ripping off authors and artists, the largest investment bubble in history threatening the economy, even more aggregation of wealth in the hands of a few tech billionaires, the deskilling of people and the utter bankruptcy of education; just to name a few.

Picture the human body. Zoom in on a single cell. It lives for a while, then splits or dies, as part of a community of cells that make up a particular tissue. This community lives together for many many cell-lifetimes, each performing their own favorite function and reproducing as much as necessary to maintain their community, consuming the essential resources they need and contributing back what they can so that the whole body can live for decades. Each community of cells is interdependent on the whole body, but also stable and sustainable over long periods of time.
Now imagine a cancer cell. It has lost its ability to harmonize with the whole and prioritize balance, instead consuming and reproducing as quickly as it can. As neighboring tissues start to die from its excess, it metastasizes, always spreading to new territory to fuel its unbalanced appetite. The inevitable result is death of the whole body, although through birth, that body can create a new fresh branch of tissues that may continue their stable existence free of cancer. Alternatively, radiation or chemotherapy might be able to kill off the cancer, at great cost to the other tissues, but permitting long-term survival.
To the cancer cell, the idea of decades-long survival of a tissue community is unbelievable. When your natural state is unbounded consumption, growth, and competition, the idea of interdependent cooperation (with tissues all around the body you're not even touching, no less) seems impossible, and the idea that a tissue might survive in a stable form for decades is ludicrous.
"Perhaps if conditions were bleak enough to perfectly balance incessant unrestrained growth against the depredations of a hostile environment it might be possible? I guess the past must have been horribly brutal, so that despite each tissue trying to grow as much as possible they each barely survived? Yes, a stable and sustainable population is probably only possible under conditions of perfectly extreme hardship, and in our current era of unfettered growth, we should rejoice that we live in much easier times!"
You can probably already see where I'm going with this metaphor, but did you know that there are human communities, alive today, that have been living sustainably for *tens, if not hundreds of thousands of years*?

P.S. if you're someone who likes to think about past populations and historical population growth, I cannot recommend the (short, free) game Opera Omnia by Stephen Lavelle enough: increpare.com/2009/02/opera-om

I think the concept is similar to Amazon who has killed retail to get a dominant position and then to monetize that position. The AI stuff is cheap and we shall get used to it. And then they slowly start boiling the frog. First, because it is integrated everywhere and one can't escape it. Second, because we lose our ability to do without.
IMHO, this bet can go terribly wrong if people will not become dependent on AI, just use it where it makes sense and is affordable.

Love how some bullshit "AI" story is on top of The Guardian.
No, "AI" doesn't show signs of self-preservation.
"AI" does not exist. It doesn't have permanence, thoughts, reasoning or consciousness.

A family member of mine made a joke about trans people and I shut it down so fast I think they are still reeling a day later.
I got extremely serious, and loud, and told them it was bullshit, and I don't want to hear that sort of garbage again.
They tried to defend it with "Oh, it's just us, we're cool" and I called bullshit on that too.

When I try to change my password, if you block paste I don't feel more secure, I wonder what other incompetence is hiding in your site's software stack.
And if you aren't letting me paste, _and_ you want annoying bullshit in my password, at least let give me a button to let me see what the fuck I am typing.
Having a password length limit, especially one as low as 15 characters, just makes me think you're doing something fundamentally wrong like storing passwords in clear text and confirms my opinion that there's a ton of other incompetence in your software stack.
This all came up when I was trying to add the mysubaru app on my wife's phone.
And a HUGE fuck you for claiming I had the wrong password when I tried to log in with the one in my password manager, but when I did a password reset, not letting me use the one from my password manager because "You can't change it to your current password."

You know what? I stick with Firefox. The Mozilla management might be detached idiots, but I firmly believe that the people actually making the browser, the engineers, have their heart at the right place.
They've shown it time and time again, bullshit got announced but not much actually happened. There was always a checkbox to get rid of that crap.
Unless the actual browser on my device does something unforgivable, I stay.

For the love fuck, this is meaningless. LLM models can't shut themselves off. They're never "on" in the first place. They don't have physicality or permanence.
It's an algorithm that transforms one state of data into another, and for each invocation needs to be fed the whole conversation again.
Perpetuating the unhinged bullshit that LLMs are somehow sentient is harmful.

Content warning: "long" rant about american sci-fi tv series and "neuro-archy"

I have the distinct impression that we could use most American "sci-fi" TV series (which seem to have a kink for post-apocalyptical scenographies) as a diagnostic tool for the autism spectrum.
For a moment, let's leave aside the tons of right-wing propaganda "hidden" in plain sight, and their excessive reliance on boring & worn out tropes (religious & cultish bullshit, irrational lack of communication & excess of anti-social behaviour, all vs all, ultra-low-iq characters*, psychotic & irrationally treacherous characters*, ultra-inconsistent character development used to justify "unexpected" plot twists, rampant anti-intellectualism...).
What could be used as a diagnosis tool is the incredible amount of strong inconsistencies that we can find in them**. It throws me out of the story every single time; and I suspect that it takes a certain kind of "uncommon personality" to feel that way about it, because otherwise these series wouldn't be so popular without real widespread criticism beyond cliches like "too slow", "it loses steam towards the end of the season", etc.
Many of those plots start in a gold mine of potentially powerful ideas... yet they consistently provide us with dirt & clay instead, while side-lining the "good stuff" as if it was too complicated for the populace.
Do you feel strongly about it? Do you feel like you can't verbalize it without being criticised as "too negative", or "too picky", or an "unbearable snob"? Do you wonder why it seems like nobody around shares your discomfort with these stories?
* : I feel this is a bit like the chicken & egg problem. Has the media conditioned part of American society to behave like dumb psychopaths as if it was something "natural", or is the media reflecting what was already there? Also, could we use other societies as models for these stories... just for a change? Please?
** : Just a tiny example: a "brilliant" engineer who builds a bridge out of fence parts and who doesn't bother to perform the most basic tests before trying it in a real setting and suffer the consequences: the bridge failing and her falling into the void. Bonus points for anyone who knows what I'm talking about.
