Content warning: I stopped using 'social media' for a while now for the usual reasons -- it's an inhumane way of interacting with people, is fully controlled by billionaires who seem hellbent on destroying democracy and life in general, is terrible for mental health, in certain cases unapologetically generates revenge and child porn, and so on. It was fairly shocking to see what it took for organisations to stop using twitter/X, and some are still on there.. and facebook, tiktok, instagram etc aren't much […]

After some days work, I finally made my first unassisted warp, and got it on the loom and threaded up - 189 ends. It seems I had only one small mistake in the threading, just had to swap two threads. Can't wait to explore some lift patterns with this ! #weaving

Around half way through the threading process, showing dangling blue threads on the loom
The finished threading, showing a fairly complex pattern

This is at Selby & Western, between Nina’s and W. A. Frost.
Some context for out-of-towners: this is a fairly affluent neighborhood, fairly white, mix of renters and homeowners, lots of lavishly restored 19th- and early 20th-century brick buildings and popular restaurants. There are old railroad tycoon mansions a few blocks away on Summit Ave. The St. Paul cathedral is just up the street.
If you were trying to preserve a sense of safety and normalcy among the comfortable and the influential in order to survive an upcoming election, this is the sort of place you’d tell your secret police goons to steer clear of.

Light Streaks — generative photography
A small selection of long-exposures of randomly generated IFS (aka Iterated Function Systems), a family of very oldskool primitive/trivial fractal functions, but which can produce a fairly wide variety of outcomes. Each image is the result of billions of iterations of a single particle being iteratively transformed (meaning the particle's current position is used as the input for computing its next position etc.) For each iteration & posit…

How to survive Instagram's algorithm as a creative
- "Instagram is wrecking my head. I have a fairly decent number of followers. But hardly anyone sees my work"
- "I have a completely organic audience, yet my posts don't reach most of my followers"
- "Instagram hides your posts unless you post a selfie or anything personal"
- "You have something new? Post it, leave and focus on more important things."
- "Do o…

As @… and others point out, we can be fairly confident that companies do things in the •general spirit• of these accusations, albeit not quite as cartoonishly as the Reddit post described.
We can and should fight this kind of corporate behavior, and the concentration of power that foments it. We also shouldn’t lean on that dubious Reddit post as any kind of smoking gun.
