Like Narcissus, the mythical figure who gave name to Trump’s most prominent personality flaw,
the president became fixated on the famous Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool,
hoping to repaint it so that it mirrored his imagined brilliance.
Instead, the algae-ridden water has turned into an on-the-nose metaphor for his own decrepitude,
as tourists have begun swarming it so they can mock this totem of Trump’s failures.
Sad to hear we’ve lost one of the all-time greats. Truly, a legend. 🎷

I'm guilty of being a "competitive pessimist" from time to time... Are you?
"Pessimism is more accurate in the short term - almost always, I'll give it that. Things do go wrong in roughly the ways people predict they will. But optimism is more productive over decades. Optimism is the thing that generates attempts, and without attempts nothing changes.

One thing that LLMs are good for: exposing undiagnosed narcissistic personality disorder in people.
If you use an LLM to generate something and then expect that people look at it or read it and admire you for it—that's 100% textbook narcissistic behavior.

“President Trump exhibits what forensic mental health experts have, across dozens of independent assessments, identified as the ‘Dark Triad’ of personality traits: narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy … Rather than constituting a clinical diagnosis, this trait-based assessment is grounded in behavioral observation and is particularly useful for assessing the level of danger an individual poses in a political leadership position. We do not offer this as a clinical verdict. We offer i…
Asked to answer as a typical human, every cutting-edge AI model rated us markedly
more neurotic, less open, less agreeable and less conscientious
than they rated themselves.
The gap on Neuroticism alone is 1.69 points on a 5-point scale.
Across 31 models from seven labs they answer the personality tests in unison:
high openness, low Dark Triad, Universalism on top, Power dead last
in every single model.

AI chatbots make use of the Barnam Effect. The same thing that makes personality tests and fortune tellers "feel" meaningful and accurate despite being total nonsense.

Somehow we got talking at length to a Benedictine monk here. One of his jobs is beekeeping 🐝 (having looked after them for 18 years), and it was amazing to hear first hand of bee intelligence. He said so much, but in summary: that he has a relationship with the bees, that they recognise humans (and recognise him), and that one can discern in experience personality among bees - both as individual and as hive.
They sherlocked the personality settings from Carrot 😂

It’s “great” how we finally have a glimpse of at least partially working 5GL (using LLMs to generate code is very close to the 1980s dream of constraint-based programming) and immediately everyone was like “we need to apply this to all areas of human life, doesn’t matter if it’s bullshit that isn’t even remotely working for those areas”.
What really gets me is the extreme hubris and delusion of grandeur that so many programmers and tech people have about this.
Don’t let your character flaws and personality issues out to make other people suffer. Idk get therapy.

But of course this hope is not emperically founded and, well, just an unrealistic hope. And this ties in with the greater picture of technology. "Tech" has become a slur.
Find a tech CEO who is an inspiring personality on the Steve Jobs level.
Find a current technology that inspires people to do great things and to be the best version of themselves?
There are these things in niches, but not on the scale of the iPhone, say.

Went to see Stuart Goldsmith doing his work in progress stand up show about the climate at the local theater.
He's a funny man and has a good friendly personality (or stage-persona at least I guess) and is terrified and anxious and angry about the way the people are treating the world without out even being their fault.
It's a good show, he's a good guy, you should go see him do it at Edinburgh or whenever he's in your town.
No action you can take as an individual really makes much difference to the end of the world stuff. You should be vegan perhaps, ethical banking perhaps. But really the only thing that works is mass social pressure, so talking about it is the best thing you can do. If you can't be vegan, at least say you are.
Perhaps telling everyone on linked-in to book him for their climate sessions is best he reckons 😆 but I don't do corporate social media at all really, so Mastodon and cross post to Bluesky is the best thing I can do perhaps.
Stu's a friend of a friend, we've met before. Don't think he recognized me sitting in the front row without context against the stage lights though. Maybe a little at the end with some context when he's rushing to get home.
Still love that Captain Pike hairdo.
