I knew that helium-voice was something to do with the change in the speed of sound when it passes through helium into air, but I just realised I didn't have a full explanation.
The wavelength of a sound (or any wave) changes when it passes from one medium to another, but the frequency stays constant - and it's frequency that our sounds respond to, not wavelength. Our vocal cords aren't affected by the helium - they'll still vibrate at the same frequency - so why do our voices sound so different?
