If I had to summarise capitalism in one word it would be “enclosure”.
That’s literally everything these bastards are about. Taking something that belongs to us all, building a fence around it, and calling it “mine.” (And if you don’t like it, “say hello to my little friend…”)
That’s literally the whole of their bullshit philosophy.

There’s a good reason they took this approach.

it bothers me that in #philosophy, a "sceptic" is someone who just assumes that some underbaked hypothesis (like "brains in a vat") explains our experience just as well as reality does.
unlike, you know, an actual sceptical person who tries to find ways of distinguishing what's real from what isn't.

Climbing culture has a storytelling idiom I call “Close Calls.”
They’re an inversion of just-so stories;
instead of tales of creation like “How the Zebra Got Its Stripes” or “How the Giraffe’s Neck Got So Long,”
Close Calls focus on tales of destruction like
“How Rebecca Lost Her Leg” or
“How Johnny Lost His Partner.”

Smalltalk wasn’t just a language; it was a philosophy of the human-computer relationship. At its heart was the idea the computers should be user-malleable: reshapable by each person to be the machine they wanted it to be.
SmallTalk’s impact is hard to overestimate. Most famously, along with CLU and Simula, it gave us objects and OOP — not just in the narrow mid-80s “everything is an object!” sense, but in the broader sense of interface-implementation separation that groups related state and behavior into a tidy abstraction. Its fingerprints are alllll oooover modern programming. But that’s not all.

Statistics is a field of mathematics concerned with the analysis of data.
Logic is a field of philosophy concerned with reasoning correctly.
At 27 pages into Gil Duršn’s new book “The Nerd Reich” I came full stop at this sentence:
“As many political schools of thought do, these technolibertarians make a philosophy out of a personality defect.”
Simply and elegantly stated. The various techno-optimistic philosophies running around Silicon Valley and the venture capital community are toxic and inhumane. We are desperately in need of a new tech manifesto that puts human wellbeing, acceptance, compassion and love as first principals. Why do we write code if not for this? The current direction of technology leadership has taken a wrong turn onto a dark and destructive path. This needs to change.
This is a great book so far. Highly recommend it.

Reasoning requires logic (which is the study of correct reasoning) and logic is a philosophical discipline. It requires understanding and a theory of mind.
You can’t statistics yourself into logic; despite some mathematicians claiming you can—it’s a categorical error to think this (indeed, a reasoning logic error).
Both from a perspective of mathematics (“it’s likely therefore it’s true” is not logically valid) and from a perspective of philosophy (which requires understanding what is actually talked about).
Therefore statistical algorithms such as LLMs can never reason.
