It’s a blatant technique, but one thing I still do that I did way back when at the beginning with the earliest plugins was have a reverb room size change rhythmically (or chugging in 16ths, or whatever time value), each time flaring between sizes. Usually it implies or is in conversation with the harmonic content of your piece.
