Finally got my messaging apps transferred over to the GrapheneOS device!
For Signal, I had to restore a backup file: device-to-device sync failed.
For WhatsApp, I had to use a 5GHz 802.11ac network for the device-to-device transfer; 2.4GHz 802.11ax and 802.11n did not work, resulting in the very helpful error message "something went wrong." Got sent this email from the elderly convenor of a political group I sometimes sit with. Thank goodness I was alert and suspicious enough - his account had been hacked and this was an email spam that could have cost a lot of money. There was no "Dear Lilly", but they had signed off with his name at the end.
