I listen to the Volts podcast for technical news about innovations on the electricity grid, so this excellent discussion of the intersection between epistemology and social psychology was as unexpected as it was interesting. Highly recommended.

Highly recommended.

Content warning: dot gov on bluesky

Apparently the US government departments are starting to join Bluesky and are getting ratioed in that the accounts are being blocked more than they are followed.
Doesn't really seem to make sense at first. The US Department Of Transportation isn't going to show up as a reply guy in your mentions and the spooks aren't going to use that account to spy on your posts.
Is the blocking then entirely performative? Because blocks are public they are votes?
I guess really it's people deliberately reading the recommended-for-you AI-driven slop feeds.
Blocked users won't show up in your machine-learning robot-recommended feeds that people apparently must be reading over there.
Just not-following would be enough for me, I don't see things I don't follow. But if you read the robot-DJ feeds then anything can show up, so you have to preemptively block it. If only to train the robot shuffle.

Let’s discuss one of the most violent phrases in the English language: “Did you read that book I gave you?” For the sake of transparency, I’ll admit to once having been one of these people. You come across a book, you decide someone would enjoy it, you give them a copy for their birthday, or Christmas, or just ‘cause. Then every time we see them we ask them if they’ve read it. What we’re really looking for is an award for having recommended the right book, or the right band, or the right TV sho…

Quote from Autocracy Inc from Ann Applebaum,
Many of the propagandists of Autocracy, Inc., have learned from the mistakes of the twentieth century. They don’t offer their fellow citizens a vision of utopia, and they don’t inspire them to build a better world. Instead, they teach people to be cynical and passive, because there is no better world to build. Their goal is to persuade people to mind their own business, stay out of politics, and never hope for a democratic alternative: Our state may …

After reading #keyboard layout for fun.
Of course, not so I could "type faster". And that's for two reasons:
1. To type faster, you have to learn the right hand and finger positions, etc. I know my habits ain't perfect, and I don't see a point in learning otherwise — see point two.
2. At least in my case of creative writing, blunt typing speed isn't the bottleneck; figuring out what to write is. And most of my corrections aren't typos, but changes of thought.
In this case, I've figured out that there's really no point in learning touch typing with a new layout. So the most obvious choice for trying one is to use it on a touchscreen, where I could change the visible layout with no effort.
But then, I've started wondering: I mostly use gesture typing, and I've noticed that it's much easier when the letters constituting the word in question are spread across keyboard, rather than close to one another. In the latter case, the keyboard often has trouble in recognizing the correct word. If the ergonomic layouts focus on putting frequent letters close to one another, wouldn't gesture typing be harder?
And indeed, Colemak's FAQ clearly states that it's not recommended for smartphones. It's kinda curious that after so many years of #QWERTY being criticized, a new technology turns out to benefit from precisely this layout.
colemak.com/FAQ#Is_Colemak_sui
