teaching a transformer net to approximate ray-tracing
input is a sequence of triangle data (limited to 4k triangles), and a sequence of 8x8 radiance pixels representing the camera (limited to 512x512 resolution)
output is a sequence of 8x8 pixels of the rendered scene. training was ~10 days. generation is ~100ms (NVIDIA A100)
the results are pretty good. scaling will be a challenge (since transformers are quadratic in sequence length)

I'm a huge believer in having a hobby that forces you to focus on one thing. This summer I'm learning how to draw and paint wildflowers. It's absorbing and relaxing and even if the results are a bit rough, it forces you to really *look* at small details.

reinderdijkhuis@mastodon.art - It's @ajroach42 's recent threads about addictive behavior in (mostly) kids (but he talks about adults and elders as well) that prompted me to evaluate my own online behavior, again. The line "… they'd rather do nothing, when doing nothing is causing them a great amount of distress, than have to put the work in to do something else" hit hard. More and more these past few months, that's been me, unless I make a very deliberate effort not to go down that path.

Slow progress the last couple days because I've been going into the office for work and the commute is eating up my time I'd otherwise spend on such things.
But now it's the weekend and the switch engine board is coming together nicely.
Still have 514 nets to route - mostly the supervisor, line card management buses, and power supply but also some other odds and ends like the FPGA JTAG and part of the SPI flash.
