Fascinating article: Shirley Tillotson, "Importing the Plantation: The Greater Caribbean Trade and Loyalist Nova Scotia’s Public Revenue, 1789–1835." It argues Nova Scotia's public expenditure was sustained by tariffs on goods produced by enslaved labour in the Caribbean. It undercuts trad narratives of small-scale fishing and farming as central to the colony's development while highlighting dependence on white supremacist modes of production.
