"So many of us were so terribly ill-informed and ill-equipped to even begin to hope to cope with the Covid-19 pandemic when it hit. Similar to the financial crisis back in 2008, where capitalism's acolytes implemented devastating austerity measures on the poor as banks were bailed out, they took advantage of our state of shock." From my latest piece, ICYMI upon release last weekend:
I wrote a bit about sandals lately, and that's a bit of interesting story.
For a long time I wore the cheapest plastic sandals. They aren't perfect but they're reasonably comfortable, and you can walk through water in them (and I used to walk through shallow rivers a lot back in the day). Their main weakness is that you need to wash your feet frequently. And I suppose they aren't the healthiest footwear.
Then diabetes came — and the recommendation not to wear sandals. Diabetes means wounds don't heal fast, and wearing open shoes comes with increased risk of wounds (that could possibly have fatal consequences). So I've avoided wearing sandals.
Quite recently, my sports shoes abraded the back of my feet, creating a wound. I had to wear sandals once again, as the only shoes that I could wear unstrapped at back. This way, they wouldn't irritate the wound and I could hope it'll heal.
This also meant I wore sandals when I got a small wound on my heel — and I've learned to step in such a way not to irritate that one.
This also meant I wore sandals when it was relatively cold.
This also meant I wore sandals when I went hiking to the mountains today — although I've only walked for a short length of "harder" trail. Not that I didn't wear sandals regularly into the mountains back in the day — but I was young and stupid back then, and now only one of these adjectives remains applicable. And I should probably note that for me, "mountains" are actually small hills in Lower Silesia or Szczecin area.
Shoes are my arch nemesis…

Dexter, but instead of being a serial killer, he has a thing for used socks. His cop dad teaches him that stealing people's socks is wrong. But when it turns out to be impossible to eliminate that dark desire, dad teaches Dexter to tame his demon for the cause of justice by only stealing the socks of bad people, and planting incriminating evidence. Dad says, just make sure you never get caught.
I used to love love looove Black Eyed Pea restaurants. Especially their squash casserole. Fortunately, I have the recipe. Yesterday, our bodega had a ton of gorgeous yellow summer squash, so today, I made a big pan of BEP squash casserole! #YUM
