Seeing a lot of people getting into tiled and scrolling window managers.
I actually like my desktop with overlapping windows and being a bit in a chaotic state and slightly different all the time.
My brain needs some variety and breaks from orderly processes, because I'm a human being and I've evolved to work best in semi-chaotic circumstances.
Obviously you do you but I'm considering this trend at least to some degree productivity wankery.

Acoustic Signatures of Pinch-Off Cavities During Water-Entry

arXiv:2602.22761v1 Announce Type: new
Abstract: This study experimentally, numerically, and theoretically investigates the cavity/bubble dynamics and radiated acoustics during the water entry of a centimeter-scale cylindrical projectile with a conical nose. Experiments were conducted in a laboratory tank, employing synchronized high-speed imaging and hydrophone measurements to characterize the cavity closure modes and their resultant acoustic signatures across a range of Froude numbers. The acoustic signal features a weak radiated signal upon impact, followed by significant pressure oscillations spanning more than 20 cycles in the flow field after cavity elongation and pinch-off. A numerical model based on the Finite Volume Method (FVM) successfully captures these physical processes. Subsequently, a semi-theoretical model that incorporates the projectile's boundary effect is developed from potential flow theory. The model not only yields a dominant cavity oscillation frequency that agrees well with experimental data, but also reveals that the boundary effect leads to a cavity oscillation frequency markedly higher than the Minnaert frequency of an equivalent-volume ellipsoidal bubble containing an internal rigid core. The dominant cavity frequency falls nearly linearly with Fr, governed by nose geometry and projectile inertia. This study clarifies the underlying physics connecting cavity dynamics during water entry to underwater acoustic radiation.

Historic Glacial Confluence
This is the site of confluence of the former glaciers Vernagtferner and Hintereisferner, two of the most (and longest) studied glaciers in the world. It is the site (at ~2200m) where several times over the past thousand years the ice of the Vernagtferner would pile up to form a massive dam, 150-200m tall, which caused a semi-permanent ice lake to form in the Rofen/Hintereis valley above (the one visible from ~7 seconds). Many times this lake would get up to …

Abstract: In this paper we explore the link between the theory of sheaves on graphs and noncommutative geometry showing that many concepts and constructions in the latter can be generalized and enhanced using methods coming from the former. They include notions such as Laplacians and connections, important in the theory of discrete noncommutative geometry, that are here explored with sheaf theoretic methods and using the language of (semi)simplicial sets.

I always wonder why public charging tenders in Germany are so contested yet useless. While in other mature markets, such as the Netherlands and Belgium, public tenders help to create a dense network with significantly lower prices for users, in Germany the process merely distributes semi-monopolies without offering any benefits to users.

ProxyFL: A Proxy-Guided Framework for Federated Semi-Supervised Learning
Duowen Chen, Yan Wang
arxiv.org/abs/2602.21078 arxiv.org/pdf/2602.21078 arxiv.org/html/2602.21078
arXiv:2602.21078v1 Announce Type: new
Abstract: Federated Semi-Supervised Learning (FSSL) aims to collaboratively train a global model across clients by leveraging partially-annotated local data in a privacy-preserving manner. In FSSL, data heterogeneity is a challenging issue, which exists both across clients and within clients. External heterogeneity refers to the data distribution discrepancy across different clients, while internal heterogeneity represents the mismatch between labeled and unlabeled data within clients. Most FSSL methods typically design fixed or dynamic parameter aggregation strategies to collect client knowledge on the server (external) and / or filter out low-confidence unlabeled samples to reduce mistakes in local client (internal). But, the former is hard to precisely fit the ideal global distribution via direct weights, and the latter results in fewer data participation into FL training. To this end, we propose a proxy-guided framework called ProxyFL that focuses on simultaneously mitigating external and internal heterogeneity via a unified proxy. I.e., we consider the learnable weights of classifier as proxy to simulate the category distribution both locally and globally. For external, we explicitly optimize global proxy against outliers instead of direct weights; for internal, we re-include the discarded samples into training by a positive-negative proxy pool to mitigate the impact of potentially-incorrect pseudo-labels. Insight experiments & theoretical analysis show our significant performance and convergence in FSSL.

It's using a dimuitive because when IBM introduced 8" diskettes in the 1970s they were substantially smaller than hard disks at the time. (Note that hard disks back then often were removable and semi-portable, often 14" in size).

Short video of an abstract realtime generative art animation playing on a 40" square screen in a dark room. The animation consists of dozens of layers of semi-random multi-scale pixel patterns, slowly scrolling and updating/rebuilding themselves, creating an endless, constantly changing tapestry of complex colorful patterns.

Indeed.

What the USA is currently doing in Venezuela looks very much like a semi-hostile takeover of one criminal organization by a more powerful one.

If there's any "rationality" it only exists in relation to the interests of shockingly small circles of power, in either country.

Hummm.
So I was thinking about how with a couple of caster-boards and straps, the bed could be upturned and stowed in the studio. Probably? I should have figured for a fold-away really.
Still. Could work...
Then, without a bed in there, the place could turn into a dining room.
I was thinking about a shape of a table for a dinner party in there.
Oh my god.
This semi-circle table curve of wood and attachable table-legs and fold-able stools might just fit, like, under the bed normally?
Looks perfect for a card-game or a Dungeon Master setup.
Could that table and it's legs and it's chairs all fit under the bed? Probably not at it's current height. But I want to raise it a bit anyway.
🤔
Oh my god, look at this though. The projector is pointed at the wall behind the throne surrounded by the seats for the council of seven.
This could be built.
Not right away, but eventually?

View across a still half-frozen lake towards the other side basking in warm afternoon light. The grasses and reeds are completely dry and golden. Some trees scattered and the forest edge in the background.
Cute close up of a narrow path in the afternoon sunlight with heather (in bloom) growing on both sides. An old tree stump semi-overgrown with moss.

Mesh Splatting for End-to-end Multiview Surface Reconstruction
Ruiqi Zhang, Jiacheng Wu, Jie Chen
arxiv.org/abs/2601.21400 arxiv.org/pdf/2601.21400 arxiv.org/html/2601.21400
arXiv:2601.21400v1 Announce Type: new
Abstract: Surfaces are typically represented as meshes, which can be extracted from volumetric fields via meshing or optimized directly as surface parameterizations. Volumetric representations occupy 3D space and have a large effective receptive field along rays, enabling stable and efficient optimization via volumetric rendering; however, subsequent meshing often produces overly dense meshes and introduces accumulated errors. In contrast, pure surface methods avoid meshing but capture only boundary geometry with a single-layer receptive field, making it difficult to learn intricate geometric details and increasing reliance on priors (e.g., shading or normals). We bridge this gap by differentiably turning a surface representation into a volumetric one, enabling end-to-end surface reconstruction via volumetric rendering to model complex geometries. Specifically, we soften a mesh into multiple semi-transparent layers that remain differentiable with respect to the base mesh, endowing it with a controllable 3D receptive field. Combined with a splatting-based renderer and a topology-control strategy, our method can be optimized in about 20 minutes to achieve accurate surface reconstruction while substantially improving mesh quality.

Good Morning #Canada
It's a brisk -23°C this morning but the infallible #Weather app is telling me that we will be -5°C or warmer over the next few weeks. Break out the shorts, Spring has arrived.
In preparation for the big thaw, I think we need a semi-regular series on the top 25 rivers in Canada. Why top 25? Hey, it's my account, my nonsensical rules. We'll count down to #1 in terms of length because size matters.
Today an honourable mention, the St. Lawrence River, commonly referred to as the St. Lawrence Seaway. Although one of the most recognizable rivers in eastern Canada, and one that drains the largest watershed on the planet, it doesn't make it into the top 50 longest rivers in the country.
