Agent libOS: A Library-OS-Inspired Runtime for Long-Running, Capability-Controlled LLM Agents
Yingqi Zhang
arxiv.org/abs/2606.03895 arxiv.org/pdf/2606.03895 arxiv.org/html/2606.03895
arXiv:2606.03895v1 Announce Type: new
Abstract: Large language model (LLM) agents are evolving from request-response assistants into long-running software actors: they maintain state across model calls, fork subtasks, wait for external events, request human authority, generate tools, and perform side effects that must be resumed and audited. This paper presents Agent libOS, a library-OS-inspired runtime substrate for LLM agents. Agent libOS runs above a conventional host operating system; it does not implement hardware drivers, kernel-mode isolation, or a POSIX-compatible operating system. Instead, it treats an agent as an AgentProcess: a schedulable execution subject with process identity, parent-child lineage, lifecycle state, a tool table derived from an AgentImage, typed Object Memory, explicit capabilities, human queues, checkpoints, events, and audit records. Its central design rule is tools are libc-like wrappers; runtime primitives are the authority boundary. Filesystem access, object access, sleeps, human approval, JIT tool registration, and external side effects are checked at primitive boundaries under explicit capabilities and policy.
We describe the design, threat model, Python prototype, and safety-oriented evaluation. The current prototype implements async scheduling, namespace-local Object Memory, runtime-integrated human approval, one-shot permission grants, per-process working directories, shell and image-registration primitives, Deno/TypeScript JIT tools over a libOS syscall broker, filesystem/object bridge tools, an injectable Resource Provider Substrate, deterministic demos, real-model smoke scripts, and 123 regression tests at the time of writing. Rather than improving planner accuracy, Agent libOS demonstrates a runtime substrate in which long-running LLM agents can be scheduled, authorized, resumed, and audited without treating tool dispatch as the trust boundary.

The Butterfly Defect Effect in Cylindrical Shell Buckling: Non-localized Interactions of Localized Imperfections
Uba K. Ubamanyu, Antoine Blond, John W. Hutchinson, Pedro M. Reis
arxiv.org/abs/2607.19245 arxiv.org/pdf/2607.19245 arxiv.org/html/2607.19245
arXiv:2607.19245v1 Announce Type: new
Abstract: We investigate the buckling of axially compressed cylindrical shells containing localized defects, focusing on interactions among multiple defects and between them and the shell edges. Using high-fidelity finite-element simulations, we first characterize the parameter space of single-dimple sensitivity, defect-edge coupling, and pairwise defect-defect interactions. Building on this deterministic baseline, we run stochastic simulations of shells with randomly distributed imperfections whose amplitudes are sampled from a log-normal distribution. Post-buckling deformations form non-axisymmetric, butterfly-shaped patterns whose `wings' reach far across the shell surface. This spatial extent induces unavoidable interactions with neighboring defects and the clamped edges, so that buckling is not necessarily initiated by the deepest defect. A larger defect population raises the likelihood of an extreme defect, producing a statistical size effect: as the mean number of defects grows, the mean knockdown factor decreases asymptotically and its variability decays exponentially. The butterfly defect effect qualitatively explains the scatter in historical experimental data by correlating the knockdown factor with the cylinder length-to-thickness ratio ($H/t$) rather than the radius-to-thickness ratio ($R/t$) alone, thereby establishing $H$ as a key parameter for stability alongside $R$ and $t$. Nonetheless, the knockdown factors obtained here remain well above those reported in historical experiments, indicating that the localized Gaussian dimple, though nearly the worst-case imperfection for spherical shells, is not so for cylinders.

Normally I have to script in Windows, so I have a folder `C:\users\me\Dropbox\skripts` that contains it all. This folder is historical and has perl and shell scripts from my UNIX sysadmin days.
Had to do some stuff in WSL and I just discovered that your WSL shell - by default - inherits your Windows `%PATH%` (and handles the mapping into the WSL file system like `C:\` --> `/mnt/c/` etc.)... as I typed a command name in my `skripts` folder and it worked.

The video (5 minutes) shows how this lets you build shell utilities that can be ^C interrupted and resumed again later so they just keep going. Eventually even on another machine.

Three dogs are on a sandy beach at the ocean's edge, all leaning in to intently sniff a horseshoe crab on the sand. Two of the golden-colored dogs are wearing rear-wheel dog wheelchairs, which support their hindquarters and allow them to stand on their front legs. A third, black-and-white dog stands to the left without a wheelchair but wearing a harness. All three dogs are clustered together, focused on the large, brownish shell of the horseshoe crab. The background features a wide beach, the o…

I had an interesting chat with a friend who mentioned a book called "The Living Company." Apparently Shell was one of the few companies that saw the 1970's oil crisis coming and was able to adapt. They did it by talking to a bunch of people randomly about the future, identifying patterns, and coming up with possible future scenarios. They then formed clear plans for these future scenarios, where those plans would cover as many related scenarios as possible.
This was actually really familiar to me, though I hadn't read the book, because that's very close to what the Seattle GDC disaster prep committee did. We identified possible disaster scenarios, then identified preparedness steps that served multiple purposes. We got boxes of n95 masks in 2018 and 2019 for wildfire smoke and did a bit of work building box-fan air purifiers. Over the years we handed out these masks to houseless folks who were most exposed to the smoke. When the pandemic hit, we were able to take some of those boxes to first responders just as manufacturing in China dropped because of their lockdowns and as others started PPE hoarding. We focused on N95 because that was one of the overlap points between the unexpected but catastrophic "flu pandemic" that we knew was possible, and the regular "wildfire smoke" problem we were just getting used to.
The book sounds like it's at least partially influenced by cybernetics. There's this Dutch cybernetics connection that I haven't quite figured out. Anyway, this guy talked about how a company needs to be sustainable and all that. My dude, you worked for an oil company. That is categorically not sustainable. All this aside, I think there are a lot of things we can and should take from capitalists (or take back, in some cases). This practice is one of them.
So maybe get together with friends and talk about what you think might happen. We live in a world of crisis, so I'll always recommend disaster preparedness. But there's more than that.
What do you think will happen in the next 5 years?
Assuming that happens, what actions would you take to push that towards the most positive outcome?
I'm listening to Revolutions and reminded of how much effort monarchies put in to preventing revolutions. Corporations can be even more advanced in their planning and preemption. What would it look like if we planned like that?

Dat zouden meer bedrijven moeten doen. 'Mogelijjk schadelijk' lijkt me een goed criterium. Dus Philip Morris, 3M, Tata, Shell, Bols, Heineken, KLM, Unox, Keurslager, Coca Cola, McDonalds, roep je hele business terug!
Primark roept producten terug: 'Stop onmiddellijk met het gebruik'

Abstract: We design a reflective scatterer that operates only in the backscatter direction using modulation of the Kerker effect. This being a phenomena where the resonant modes of a scattering object produce total destructive interference in the backscatter direction. Our design consists of a dielectric shell and an interior metal element that provide the required dipolar contributions for Kerker interference with angular stability. By incorporating a PIN diode, we obtain a scatterer that exhibits strong amplitude modulation in the backscattering direction that is weaker at other bistatic angles. Backscatter modulation is a key technology to connect everyday objects but can be vulnerable to eavesdropping, the device presented in this work may help guard against such flaws.

gotta give mass to photons

Problem 2.13 from Zangwill - Modern Electrodynamics

If the Photon Had Mass . . . If the photon had a mass m, Gauss’ law with E = −∇ϕ changes from∇ 2 ϕ = −ρ/ 0 to an equation which includes a lenght L = h/mc:
Experimental searches for m use a geometry first employed by Cavendish where a solid conducting sphere and a concentric, conducting, spherical shell (radii r1 < r2) are maintained at a common potential by an infinitesimally thin connecting wire. When m = 0, all excess charge resides on the…

I am starting to worry.
Dwl installed just fine, I compiled it from source. Learned how-to and applied the specific wlroots version in Gentoo. Applications I need are there. Five patches applied, all good. Even got noctalia-shell running. The project has been revived and a lot of patches have been updated to the latest version in the last month.
I stop tweaking now. Have to end the weekend on a high. Beer is cold. More next week!
