I have been looking for a screenshot of these icons I drew for gnome as placeholders, but they also encouraged Tuomas Kuosmanen to jump in and fix it, and finally found a copy online!
The “sl” stood for “symbolic link” and “sock” for socket - I used these hand drawn icons for each mime type:
