Very interesting to see the results of Swiss dynamic network tariffs: performing as they should, with savings for both the user and the grid.
Prosumers effectively shift heavy loads out of the evening grid peak and absorb the solar peak at midday.

The graph shows the price and grid load throughout the day
-13.7% savings for customers on a dynamic grid tariff compared to a standard tariff.
-6.7% reduction in PV injection without explicit PV curtailment
-14.0% reduction in evening peak
Estimated DSO savings per customer and year: 300 Franks

Ahh I just noticed that when I import GPX tracks into #wanderer, it creates routes but no activity. That's why my stats page is empty (and as I found it out, I remember that I asked that... A long while ago).
Now I wonder, if I want to import and add the activities for 2026... Doing it retrospectively for 2025 is too much effort to me (with too little value). 🤔

It started out as an exploratory bike ride in neighboring Botetourt County (locals pronounce it “bot-uh-tot”). The ride itself was a disaster of constantly getting lost in trying to connect from the Cherry Blossom Trail onto the Greenfield Trail. You have to take a few horse trails. They’re marked, but only so far as to tell you that you’re on a horse trail. Intersection? “Horse Trail” 😐

Erik Uden on Instagram: "Babe, wake up. New man-made horrors beyond comprehension dropped!! In the end of the day, these companies probably realized that, just like with AI, they can somehow use scare tactics to attract venture capital. It's still a horrifying thing to think of, but possibly overblown to get money. The headline of the Science article reads: Not alive, but not dead: disembodied human brains used for drug testing By restoring some functions to intact brains from deceased donors, the startup Bexorg hopes to create a better drug development test bed for neurodegenerative diseases, written by Sara Reardon, published on the 20th of May 2026. Though, reading this Science article made me think: aren't we the brain? Am I missing something here? Now, of course the devil lies in the detail and the article makes it clear that this startup only restores “some functions”, which is certainly more complex in action than it is in theory written here, but certain language of the article makes me question the author's understanding of what is a human. The article writes: “Just a day ago, the brain was in a living person. Now, hours after its owner died, it sits on a cart draped in tubes [...]” What do you mean “it's owner” — isn't the brain it's owner? Isn't that where it's owner is? I mean, certainly the brain had no more activity, the person must've been declared brain dead by all standards before being sent to this startup, still it's odd hearing someone donated their brain instead of saying they've donated... themselves? Also “using a set of proprietary brain-sustaining machines” is a terrible sentence I always thought the people who don't donate their full body to hospitals are religious lunatics, but this is the first time I wrote something on my organ donor card. They can take my brain, but not as one piece."

Coming from Seattle, I'm pretty amazed at the level of anarchist (and adjacent) activity in Amsterdam (and the Netherlands more generally). There are dozens of squats (legalized and not), some of which host events daily.
Squat radar is amazing. The idea of a while site just to keep track of events is wild. But the events are really just a portion of it. There's Vrijbond, which has Vrij Markt. Vrij Markt is a place you can buy stuff made by anarchists. Of course there's patches and buttons, like Americans would be familiar with, but there's also things like pasta and soap...

[…] and I opened the case (politely examined by the guards of the Palace at four stages of my approach to the Red Hall) that held my ansible and some pictures. The pictures—films, photos, paintings, actives, and some cubes—were a little gallery of Man: people of Hain, Chiffewar, and the Cetians, of S and Terra and Alterra, of the Utter-mosts, Kapteyn, Ollul, Four-Taurus, Rokanan, Ensbo, Cime, Gde and Sheashel Haven … The king glanced at a couple without interest. “What’s this?”
“A person from Cime, a female.” I had to use the word that Gethenians would apply only to a person in the culminant phase of kemmer [a cyclical period of heightened sexual activity during which secondary gender characteristics emerge], the alternative being their word for a female animal.
“Permanently?”
“Yes.”
He dropped the cube and stood swinging from foot to foot, staring at me or a little past me, the firelight shifting on his face. “They’re all like that—like you?”
This was the hurdle I could not lower for them. They must, in the end, learn to take it in their stride.
“Yes. Gethenian sexual physiology, so far as we yet know, is unique among human beings.”
“So all of them, out on these other planets, are in permanent kemmer? A society of perverts? So Lord Tibe put it; I thought he was joking. Well, it may be the fact, but it’s a disgusting idea, Mr. Ai, and I don’t see why human beings here on earth should want or tolerate any dealings with creatures so monstrously different. […]”

The Fitbit app has always sucked, but in unavoidable ways. Today Google (owners of Fitbit) forced a new “Google Health” app on me. It objectively and absolutely sucks. They’ve reserved half the main screen for a LLM “coach.”

I highly recommend reading this book, it’s extremely relevant today—notably it doesn’t matter what your stance is on “AI”.
Programming is an inherently human and social activity; it doesn’t matter if you’re a solo programmer, working with a team or using chatbots, or a combination of all of this.

I know bigger cities, tend to be more active. Seattle feels pretty small. But Amsterdam is barely larger (though a bit more dense). They're really comparable in terms of size. But the scale of activity is not even on the same map. It's an order of magnitude difference....

I've hung out in other cities, and I don't feel like any US city is even close. Like, maybe Baltimore or New York, I guess. But that's only because of the scale.
I haven't really traveled around Europe enough. Is Squat Radar actually representative of Europe in general, or is the Netherlands just massively overrepresented? Is there a huge scene here, or are there other parts of Europe that have tremendous amounts of activity (I guess Spain and France, but I'm still trying to figure it out)...

Non-obvious Manipulability in the Additively Separable Group Activity Selection Problem

Abstract: In this work, we study the additively separable Group Activity Selection Problem (AS-GASP) in an imperfect information setting, where agents have private preferences over activities and weights over other agents. Our goal is to design mechanisms that assign agents to activities based on their declared preferences and weights, with the objective of maximizing social welfare while ensuring truthful reporting. We, therefore, focus on the notion of non-obvious manipulability (NOM), a form of resilience to manipulation. We first investigate the relationship between NOM and social welfare optimality. In this regard, our main result shows that, when preferences and weights are arbitrary or non-negative, any optimal mechanism is non-obviously manipulable. In contrast, when either preferences or weights are binary, we show that optimality and NOM may be incompatible. We then turn to computational aspects. While it is known that computing an optimal outcome for the AS-GASP is NP-hard even in restricted settings, we establish a strong inapproximability result showing that no polynomial-time algorithm can guarantee a bounded approximation ratio when preferences and weights may take arbitrary values. In turn, when preferences are non-negative, we show that a bounded approximation is possible, and we present two asymptotically optimal approximation mechanisms that are also guaranteed to satisfy NOM.
