A few remarks on "AI" usage and the narrative surrounding it. I think it's about the difference between disconnected creating and embodied making.

This week I’m thinking back to this powerful quote (long-circulating, origin unclear):

Sometimes people use “respect” to mean “treating someone like a person”
and sometimes they use “respect” to mean “treating someone like an authority”
and sometimes people who are used to being treated like an authority say “If you won’t respect me I won’t respect you,” and what they mean is “If you won’t treat me like an authority then I won’t treat you like a person.”

What a treat: A reader send me a bunch of hand-printed cards inspired by my article "Something From Nothing" tante.cc/2025/12/12/something-

Photo of 4 hand-printed postcards, two with black type, two with light-blue type.
All cards say
"don't create.
make!
(it's about the process)"

Back when I was little, kids used to freak each other out about bad guys they saw or said they saw or heard somebody say they saw: Gang members. Kidnappers. Drug dealers.
Sometimes it was just attention-seeking or scaring each other for fun. Sometimes it was genuinely scary. Sometimes it was even based in reality. Regardless, these are the boogeymen of my childhood.
I’ve had the chance to talk to some little kids this week. You know who’s the playground boogeyman now? ICE.
