As someone who's had back issues, could some explain to me why people wear weighted vests and add all that sustained compression to their spine and think it's a good idea? Rucking feels like a macho flex because regular walking is for pussies.

Just read two quite intense novels back to back, and was feeling a bit at sea about what to read next. My TBR pile was not enticing me.
So I got out my 30 yr old copy of Neuromancer, because it's always right!

Elderly paperback with yellowing pages, which the spine is coming loose from.

Apparently Timothy Doyle, a well known Marvel artist has been making some Anti-ICE art using The Punisher, Wolverine and Ghost Rider.
(h/t to bsky.app/profile/roterote.bsky)

Top image The Punisher with an ICE agent at gunpoint. Text reads:

"OH GOD, PLEASE...
I HAVE A FAMILY!"
HE SAYS...
"SO DID THEY," I SAY. YOU DIDN'T CARE, WHY SHOULD I?"

Bottom image a close up of Frank Castle’s face with a shell casing flying past. Text reads:

"5.5 POUNDS OF PRESSURE AND ANOTHER NAZI GONE."

"I TRY NOT TO SMILE.

"IT STILL HAPPENS.”
Wolverine stabbing an ICE agent through the skull and another ICE agent through the chest.
Ghost Rider on his motorcycle dragging one ICE agent along the ground and forcing his head to the pavement while he holds a second ICE agent by the neck. Text reads:

“THE RIDER APPEARED
FLYING DOWN THE STREET AT 90 MPH, GRABBING THE AGENT BY THE NECK.
THE SOUND OF HIS SPINE SNAPPING COULD BE HEARD DOWN THE BLOCK.
OLIC
THE SECOND GUY...
THE RIDER PRESSED HIS HEAD INTO THE STREET, GRINDING IT DOWN LIKE A BELT SANDER.

THEY FOUND HIM
A MILE DOWN THE ROAD, JUST HALF THE HELMET LEFT, AND WHAT WAS I…

From Pig Tales by Marie Darrieussecq

There was no longer anything to keep me in the city, among people. If I hadn't been so heavy, I could have flown away like the birds.

But my rump, my breasts, all that flesh went with me everywhere. Not only did my spine ache, my chest hurt, too. I didn't want to lift up my dress to check on my spots, and my new breast pulled painfully beneath the skin, the way they do at puberty. I bent forward, and all that suffering disappeared. My dress stuck out stiffly around me, smelling richly of fresh…
I was convinced that my entire body was affected by some kind of freakish retention of blood. My complexion was turning ruddy, and the customers gradually fell into barnyard ways with me. Too engrossed in themselves and their pleasure, they never noticed a thing, but their new inclinations turned the massage table into a sort of haystack out in a field.

Some of the clients began to bray, others

grunted like pigs, and little by little, most

of them wound up on all fours. I told myself

that i…

Because because because because because. Because of the wonderful things he did in the last scene.
Improv teacher Steve Hoopla in today's 'story' course guided us through some "Because Games", in which scenes are to be causally connected. Each following on from prior scenes. Because that happened, this happened.
He didn't explicitly mention Pixar's "Story Spine", but the main loop in Pixar's story template is "...and because of that..." looping over and over between the introduction, call to adventure, and conclusion.
Causality is what strings a story together, gives it structure an avoids it being just a disconnected dream sequence. This scene is only happening because of the events in the prior scenes. It gives the string of scenes meaning and relevance.
So good fun to drill some of that stuff with the team and end up with sheep infestations and santa claus robot wars among other laughs.
Gonna miss next week's session due to a prior engagement, but the team is gelling well. Pretty sure we could do this show without much further guidance really. Everyone's very good.

Backbone test.
(They have the votes; do they have the spine? Pressure from us helps strengthen theirs.)
"Senate Democrats alone can halt funding for ICE. So far, the Democratic leadership has not stepped up. Only enormous pressure from their constituents will force them to show any backbone."

This from @… is a very good question. My own educated guess is that ICE has been compiling a “future harassment” list, rather than already having a “kill list;” the former makes far more sense in the context of their behavior here and Good’s history.
Regardless of the answer, it is a •very• good question. If Congress had a spine, they’d be marching DHS in front of them to answer it.

Just heard a story on the Indiana Senate showing some spine in the face of violent threats, it occurs to me that if one had billions of dollars, one could probably buy a LOT of untraceable threats. There doesn’t need to be a mass populace making threats, just a paid staff.

I have psoriatic spondylitis, which is pretty much psoriatic arthritis that attacks my SI joints, spine, lungs, & skin. It came w/ horrible eczema, mostly on my face (ARGH), elbows, & in my ears. I’d hate to add up how much $$$ I’ve spent on eczema creams over the yrs, but it’s a LOT. Not too long ago, a derm I know told me to try Desitin diaper cream. I did. It works better than anything I’ve ever tried, & it’s $6-7. 1/2

Can we just impeach Schumer and replace him with someone with a functioning spine?

(And yes, I'm aware that impeachment doesn't apply to congress. Screw the particulars, the point stands.)

The thing that Renee Good now knows, that Tortuguita knows, that Heather Heyer knows, that I only know because I glimpsed for a second, is that when you die fighting oppression you live forever in that memory of resistance. When we carve their names into a monument, along with all the other names of the murdered and disappeared, that will stand, perhaps, across from the statue of Willem in the park where the Northwest Detention Center once stood, they will always be reminders of what it looks like to sacrifice everything in order to be on the right side of history.
The names of those who resist live as ghosts, summoned by name to haunt future oppressors, summoned by name to awaken our own conscience to the call. Martyrs, whispered like the White Rose or yelled as a threat like John Brown, cannot die so long as any of us with a bit of spine carries even an ounce of humanity.
It is possible to die knowing you did the right thing, and I have felt it. There is an acceptance that is impossible to imagine without being there, without feeling it for yourself. You have nothing to fear in resisting, even if it ends you. But you will never forget the shame of doing nothing if you fail to.

Dear @… ,
I’ve just finished your latest #book “Moral Ambition” with that intimidating back cover text as my first one this year. I found the table of contents populistically appalling and the actual content really

Book Spine of the book “Moral Ambition” in German from Rutger Bregman.

Are there any librarians or bibliophiles out there who can tell me what the best glue is to use to reattach these loose pages to the spine? 🙏🏻 (book is 30 yrs old & often reread)
