Yet another example of how the real world refuses to comply with the human need to classify and label things.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) is tracking an ongoing storm named Kujira that had passed over northern Luzon island and is expected to pass over it again.
The Philippines’ weather agency, PAGASA, considers this system to be two, named Luis from July 29 to August 3, and Maymay from August 4. It considers Luis to have dissipated when it passed over Luzon.

A recent analysis by renowned space debris researchers Hugh Lewis and Donald Kessler shows that
this dense bit of orbit is the only altitude below 800 kilometres that is above the collisional runaway threshold.
In other words, if there is a collision at 550 kilometres altitude, the debris would collide with other satellites, making m…

Seeing Inside the Storm: Improving Nowcasting by Integrating Meteorological Drivers

Abstract: Most nowcasting systems, built on radar reflectivity, focus on current precipitation, ignoring the atmospheric precursors -- such as low-level convergence, turbulent eddies, and latent heating -- that offer a fleeting window to foresee storm birth. We introduce MeteoLogist, a physics-inspired radar intelligence framework that models the full life cycle of convection -- from its precursors to organized storm evolution. However, exploiting these precursors is non-trivial: they originate from multiple meteorological drivers -- thermodynamic, kinematic, and microphysical -- that evolve asynchronously (C1) and remain spatially fragmented (C2). To this end, MeteoLogist designs three tightly integrated components. The Physics-Tailored Encoders process radar echoes according to their intrinsic physical scales and semantics, forming thermodynamic, kinematic, and microphysical streams that capture distinct dynamical regimes. The Temporal-Phase Aligner addresses C1 by leveraging causal temporal attention to capture when and how different drivers interact and activate. The Cross-Field Spatial Aggregator addresses C2 through cross-regional fusion, aligning weak and scattered precursors across neighboring cells to expose upstream triggers and enforce spatial coherence. Evaluated on 3D-NEXRAD (2020--2022, US-wide), MeteoLogist boosts high-impact detection (CSI40) by 9.7% over strong baselines, and achieves a remarkable 37.67% gain during the storm-developing stage -- demonstrating true foresight in sensing storms before they appear. The code can be found in the supplementary material.

A strengthening El Niño could reshape U.S. drought patterns, potentially leading to persistent dryness in the Plains.
Experts are concerned that a "Super El Niño" could emerge, raising the possibility of a "mini-Dust Bowl" scenario.
El Niño typically shifts storm tracks, bringing wetter conditions to the southern U.S. but leaving northern areas drier.
While a repeat of the 1930s Dust Bowl is unlikely due to modern farming practices, prolonged drought …

- Cyber-attack
- Earthquake (FEMA or KC)
- Wind Storm/Power (KC)
- Critical Power Failure
- Pandemic Flu (KC)
- Hurricane
- Chemical Accident
I think we ultimately eliminated "Chemical Accident" as "not something we could do anything about" and "Pandemic Flu" as "too big." Funny that the last one turned out to be something that we had to take care of anyway.

If the only thing that makes a "Ferrari" a “Ferrari" is the sound... then why the heck have we been impressed at its speed, its agility, its style, its accoutrements, its handling, and its engineering all these years?
If being an electric “breaks" that because it doesn't "sound right" then I think, perhaps, you may be missing the boat...
I'm actually disappointed they tried to 'replicate' a 'sound' from the mechanics inside... because the blinding speed, relentless torque, and absolutely insane engineering all in a *nearly silent* vehicle, should have been part of the charm and wonder.
But some people just gotta have that roar. I get it... but.. also... some things do have to end and we will all be better off for it.
Though really, we'd be much better off on public transit and/or a bike or our own two feet but i digress.

Channeling rainwater wisely creates a thriving landscape, providing both cooling shade and food for the public.
Instead of sending it down concrete curb edges and into storm drains,
cuts in the curb move water toward native trees and plants.
As Millison says, this simple change is key to “turning depleted neighborhoods into thriving ecosystems.”
