Now we know just how much Big Tech’s pursuit of AI is costing the environment.
Both Google and Amazon released their sustainability reports this week,
and the numbers aren’t pretty.
Each company has pledged to zero-out its carbon emissions in the coming years,
but AI has made those goals a lot harder to hit.
🔥Google’s total carbon emissions are up 25% since last year, and
Amazon’s are up 16%.
A close reading of the reports suggests that both Amazon …

Circular Economy Synergies and Trade-offs in Data Centres
Vlad C. Coroam\u{a}, Oana Dumbrav\u{a}
arxiv.org/abs/2608.04571 arxiv.org/pdf/2608.04571 arxiv.org/html/2608.04571
arXiv:2608.04571v1 Announce Type: new
Abstract: This report analyses data centre (DC) sustainability and circularity, revealing existing synergies and trade-offs:
The PUE is too coarse, mixing cooling and power provisioning. It wrongly attributes server fan consumption and transformation losses to IT energy. It does not measure compute but infrastructure efficiency, which is already outstanding. Compute energy, however, is exploding. Better energy metrics for DCs would thus cover i) compute efficiency, ii) transformation efficiency, and iii) cooling overhead.
Trade-offs exist between cooling energy and water as well as on-site and upstream water: Consuming water on-site lowers the cooling energy, which also lowers the water consumed upstream in power generation. For 'wet' electricity, there is little competition: It is worth spending more on-site energy to save both electricity and related upstream water. For 'dry' electricity, there is a trade-off.
Waste heat recovery brings energy circularity but has limited uses and is not the same energy quality, a fact not reflected by current metrics. A better metric would consider the avoided energy through heat recovery instead of the amount recovered.
Material circularity can be achieved by interpreting the 9R framework in the context of DCs. Circularity-enhancing measures can be categorised into product design, process design and business models, choice of materials, and operating conditions. Together, they have effects across all circularity levels.
The relation between DCs and the power grid is complex. Modern DCs present new challenges for the grid. Mitigation includes battery storage and onsite generation. These measures have, in turn, further consequences, both beneficial and detrimental. They can offer grid flexibility as well as innovations in the field of energy. But they also bring noise, pollution, and GHGs, and compete with the energy sector for resources.

Given that Meta is answerable to no one other than its shareholders, one might expect a low standard of environmental reporting from the company – especially given the way it has made very public its repudiation of all things the present US administration might regard as woke. One would be wrong.

Estimated Demand for Mega-Constellation Internet Service
Akhil Rao
arxiv.org/abs/2608.08851 arxiv.org/pdf/2608.08851 arxiv.org/html/2608.08851
arXiv:2608.08851v1 Announce Type: new
Abstract: The near-term growth of the commercial space economy and sustainability of the low-Earth orbit (LEO) environment depends on the commercial prospects of large LEO satellite telecommunications constellations (``mega-constellations''). If successful, mega-constellations can spur competition between launch providers, which may lead to lower launch prices. They may also demand orbital sustainability services and/or generate additional collision risk, which may in turn affect space sustainability interests. Consumer demand for mega-constellations' internet services is critical to their commercial success. This analysis presents a method to estimate consumer demand for mega-constellations' internet services, using SpaceX's Starlink over December 2021--November 2023 as an example. This analysis finds that Starlink users are highly concentrated in the wealthiest countries. It also finds that consumer demand for Starlink is growing more slowly than orbital capacity is being added and more slowly than demand for non-Starlink internet overall. Continuation of these trends may indicate that the market for mega-constellation internet is less lucrative than previous forecasts have indicated.
