Today I got to #peerreview a perspective (which is always just some tepid takes from some dudes) on AI and its role in lab management. 28 pages of wishful thinking. AI can help with everything, from parsing your XPS data to optimizing the layout of your office for maximal idea generation. I'm sure @… would "love" this trash. Also, apparently, AI has been used since the 18th century. I did link them to @… for good measure. I'm sure Springer Nature will publish it anyway.
SO!
I can fix my code so that the arguments to FEXPRs are not evaluated, by deferring the call to EVLIS into APPLY; but this is not what the code given on pages 70-71 does, and so my code will then not directly follow the specification in the #Lisp 1.5 Programmer's Manual;
OR,
I can not do this, in which case FEXPRs will not work as specified on pages 18 and 19.

Firefox has added something new. Something useful. Something I really wanted. Split view.
So, instead of having to open two instances of Firefox and awkwardly arranging them side by side I can just open two pages in the same tab.
I don't know how long it has been since Firefox has made me this happy. The turning off AI button was progress but it was a problem they themselves had created.

Does anyone have experience with deploying #Codeberg Pages on a custom domain? I've followed the instructions on [1], then [2], except for actually replacing the A/AAAA records. I've been trying the new website with /etc/hosts, but I keep getting SSL fatal error. Any clue what I'm doing wrong? Or does Codeberg only deploy new TLS certificates after I update the domain (and therefore get downtime)?
[1] https://docs.codeberg.org/codeberg-pages/
[2] https://docs.codeberg.org/codeberg-pages/using-custom-domain/
Interesting LLM nuance: why does using phrases like "you're a pen-tester" cause chatbots to emit substantially different predictions, and basically "follow" that instruction? Because of how LLMs work, this implies that the training data has plenty of examples where real humans told each other that they were some role and the humans just immediately jumped into that role without question or intervening dialogue. But that's not something people do in normal conversation. Even in playing-with-kids contexts if you drop that out of the blue you're probably going to get "no I want to be a robot" or "but you were the elephant last time!" rather than immediate assumption of the assigned role.
It's possible that training LLMs to predict immediate role-assumption is something the big models spent a lot of manual effort on. But what I think is more likely is: it's the legacy of role-play forums! All those reams of pages of teenagers (yes, often horny) pretending to be Captain Kirk or their own incredibly cringe "cool" character (but honestly, why call it cringe, let kids be kids and have fun)...
So next time you "tell" a chatbot "you're a..." to get it to do what you want, I'm pretty sure you have an RP forum teen from the past to thank :)

"It places page cache pages in a writable scatterlist, separated from the legitimate write region by nothing more than an offset boundary. The design assumes every AEAD algorithm will confine its writes to the intended destination, but nothing in the API enforces this, and nothing documents it as a requirement.
Unfortunately, one AEAD algorithm breaks this silent invariant."
"No other standard AEAD algorithm in the kernel [uses memory that doesn't belong to it as a scratch pad]. GCM, CCM, and regular authenc all confine their writes to the legitimate output area. authencesn alone writes past the boundary."
I'm actually amazed that there's only one bug here. Somehow almost everyone just managed to do the right thing, despite no mechanism enforcing it and no documentation describing it. That's just amazing. It's a testament to the skill of those developers, despite an incredibly bad design.

Just noted interesting parallels between #ArtemisII and Apollo 11 and 12, involving #SolarEclipses, either by the close Moon or by the Earth: during or after each of the three missions the astronauts described these events as their visual highlights. The Artemis II crew has done this several times - and in the post-flight press conference after #Apollo11 Neil Armstrong did it, too, in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yz6nzutr7RU#t=42m19s in the segment from 42:20 (in the transcript https://files.eric.ed.gov/fulltext/ED059051.pdf on PDF pages 21--22).
What he was describing is the eclipse just before arrival at the Moon of which I had re-processed the best image in https://www.facebook.com/dan.fischer.393/posts/pfbid02mf6UK3L2j5SgPiQsJk9JVYmo6XvZwDDZ23BYpXwJPDszaSpUYzuinkMyHzh9RF8Rl -> https://skyweek.wordpress.com/2024/07/25/allgemeines-live-blog-ab-dem-25-juli-2024/#Jul26 (and he is mistaking the zodiacal light they saw and photographed with the solar corona, the very same mistake made repeatedly during Artemis II).
Finally, a solar eclipse by the huge Earth observed from Apollo 12 just before splash-down was described by Alan Bean as "the most spectacular sight of the whole flight" while it happened: https://skyweek.wordpress.com/2019/11/24/eine-fette-sofi-fur-apollo-12-durch-die-erde/ (no images of totality were taken but Bean later painted the view from memory). The reason I had looked up the Apollo 11 presser was to see how this famously well-prepared post-lunar mission presentation looked like and when it happened: 19 days after their return.
