To dig slightly deeper here, I think that there's a feedback loop between "fall in love/wait for your perfect match (and by the way girls the only career you should aspire to is the literally unattainable 'princess'" Disney stuff and this "my characters are complex I'm so sophisticated; they suffer but it's not intolerable and their lives are good enough despite the imperfections" crap that gets praised as so evocative of the human condition. In fact, I think it merely evokes the condition of its authors & fans who were poisoned by the Disney in their youth and who have remained bad as relationships ever since, though this is not exactly their fault. In any case, their white middle-aged wisdom-shaped-but-quite bitter and intricately-constructed-so-it's-hard-to-see-the-really-untrue-character-facets work ends up keeping their audience within the "romance is luck" cult by way of reassuring them that a middling romance with lots of doubt and complications is "just life" even though the author doesn't actually have any broader perspective on what life is than anyone else.
This has turned into a bit of a rant, but I think I'll just add that reading Mama by Nikkya Hargrove just before Dream State helped immensely to see how the distant & awkward parent-child relationships of the latter are not a product of human nature but instead of white western culture & capitalism.
(The defeatism about climate change is a whole nother dimension of wrong about Dream State, by that's a separate rant.)

Series A, Episode 02 - Space Fall
DAINER: You drink it first.
[Avon crawls through the service channel. He reaches the hatch leading into the computer room. He quietly opens the hatch, sees the technician, and closes the hatch again. The technician doesn't see this, and continues to check the computer. Avon waits for a bit, and opens the hatch again.]

Claude Sonnet 4.0 describes the image as: "This appears to be a scene set in what looks like a spacecraft or futuristic facility, with characteristic white/grey walls and technical equipment visible in the background. The setting has the clinical, sterile appearance typical of sci-fi productions from this era. There are several people in the scene wearing period-appropriate costumes - some in earth-toned clothing and others in what appears to be more formal or military-style attire. The lightin…

Series B, Episode 05 - Pressure Point
AVON: If I can fire at ground level, the beam radiation should be great enough to cut a narrow channel through the sensor mesh. That would give you eight seconds to get from here to the blockhouse. The mesh would start its repair cycle instantly. Take one step off the channel and you're dead. I know it's a slim chance, but it's the best I can come up with.
BLAKE: Let's try it.

Claude 3.7 describes the image as: "This image appears to be from a vintage science fiction television series from the late 1970s or early 1980s. The scene shows four people in distinctive costume attire kneeling or sitting in a grassy outdoor setting with vegetation in the background.

The costumes are quite notable - one person wears a burgundy/red padded outfit, another is in a beige/yellow costume, while the others are dressed in darker clothing. The styling and production aesthetic is char…
