What a day! Spent 3 hours with a MA student to finish our pilot experiment for her research project (it’s launched!), meeting 1 with former current PhD students on paper edits, meeting 2a b with another current PhD student on paper edits slides for a talk (different topic), meeting 3 with a future PhD student and their second supervisor on “what it means to do a PhD”, then 7 meetings with students on their term paper topics. 😅 All made possible by the fact that virtually all of German academia is on vacation, so I received a single digit number of actionable emails today #academicChatter

We have *so* many items on our lists, we managed to stay completely uninfomred about the recent election in germany.
Getting rid of news that we don't want to see is such a crucial feature that I wouldn't like to miss any more (certain politics, catastrohies, certain sports, certain tech topics, ...).

Saw #WizardOfTheKremlin , probably the last screening at my local. Now I'd like to read the book.
For a film about Putin (told from his advisor's point of view), you learn almost nothing about his motivations / mentality. But I did learn that events I had separated in my mind occurred at nearly the same time (Putin turning to politics/Russian apartment bombings 1 month later) (Sochi Olympics/'little green men' invasion of Ukraine).
There are a number of interesting one liners/points of view from all of the protagonists and some nostalgic (for me) nightclub scenes.
The costume, hair and makeup departments were excellent, btw, with exactly the right bad haircuts. Alexander Zaldostanov and Igor Sechin looked especially convincing, Putin was also surprisingly true-to-life.

I stumbled onto an excellent podcast, Inside Photo Organizing, that has four seasons of tips on how to scan old photo albums, set up backup drives, choose a cloud storage option, share with relatives, sync with genealogy sites, etc. Both hosts (Allison Freedman and Susan Wolak) are nerdy but bring on even nerdier guests. Just finished "Healer of the Water Monster" by Brian Young. I'm reading a bunch of juvenile fiction right now in a quest to have some good recommendations for my kids to read in a few years when they're old enough, and this one definitely makes the cut, with deeply-integrated #OwnVoices Diné cultural elements, good (to my reading) handling of complex topics like divorce and depression, and cool magical elements. This is exactly the kind of new generation of kids' fiction I'm looking for that drops the regressive themes present in so much of what I read at that age. For example, I just before this I read Howl's Moving Castle and then The House of Many Ways by Dianna Wynne Jones, and while the first was pretty much great, the sequel has a whole benevolent monarchy thing that's central to the book in a way that weighs down the politics of the book a lot. Unsurprisingly, the indigenous perspective is a refreshing one.

There’s specifically a bunch of “history” channels that do this, on various topics such as computer games.
It’s heartbreaking to read comments from people who wonder why the channel doesn’t have more subscribers—and they feel so awful when they learn from other commenters that they’ve been suckling on slop teats.
