A faulty memory bank is located in Voyager 1's Flight Data System (FDS), one of three computers on the spacecraft.
The FDS duties include packaging Voyager 1's science and engineering data for relay to Earth through the craft's Telemetry Modulation Unit and radio transmitter.
According to NASA, about 3 percent of the FDS memory has been corrupted, preventing the computer from carrying out normal operations.

I had the incredible privilege of working/studying in the cosmic ray lab run by Ed Stone, chief scientist on Voyager. The campus used the auditorium to show images coming from the spacecraft as they arrived. Also classrooms with TVs. An expert was there to provide commentary. I remember Larry Soderblom being asked what to make of the first pic of Amalthea: "I have no idea."

The team has long suspected the root cause to be a corrupted area of memory in the FDS computer. On Mar 1, they sent some commands to make the FDS skip around sections of memory. Listening to the Universe with Next Generation Ground-Based Gravitational-Wave Detectors

We employ a data-driven approach to investigate the rigidity and spatial dependence of the diffusion of cosmic rays in the turbulent magnetic field of the Milky Way.
