France is providing a wonderful example of why if and when we dumped the British Monarchy, a Canadian Republic would probably be best not to go to a fully elected Presidential system but rather keep the appointed and largely powerless Constitutional head of state with the same Parliamentary system.
There is something to be said for not only the simplicity of our Parliamentary system but also the election of MPs that turn into a Cabinet and PM.

Here are my favourites from the National Portrait Gallery's Portrait Award 2025. It's a fantastic selection this year, and free to see as always.

Mother, by Diego José Aznar Remón

Composed in muted tones, with momentary flashes of pink, this portrait of the artist's wife and son shows them on an unkempt bed, the exhausted mother asleep, the baby awake and looking directly at the viewer. It is a moment of gorgeous intimacy.
The Echo - Self-Portrait, by Pippa Hale-Lynch

This self-portrait has the quality of a doubly exposed photograph, or one that has slipped and smudged in the process of development. Your eye slides over the detail, unable to lock on. Her face is pale, but with flushed cheeks, against a black background. The painting explores themes of solitude and grief stemming from the loss of her mother.
Ukrainian Girl, by Nelson Hernandez

A female figure with her back to the viewer stands at a window, through which shines a wintry light illuminating individual strands of her light blonde hair. Chilean artist Nelson Hernandez's spectral portrait of his Ukrainian friend, Kseniia, captures a brief moment in time: 'I was moved by her stillness as she gazed out the window. Suddenly, the drawing in her hoodie evoked in me a scene of war, a metaphor of her past and the burden she carries.'
Portrait of a Sculptor, by Dide

Blasting out bright red, the surface of Dide's portrait of the sculptor Laurence Edwards seems alive with a kinetic, electric energy. The sculpture sits in a brightly patterned armchair, looking directly at the viewer, with legs crossed and grubby boots prominent. It explores 'the messy plaster-splattered existence of artists in their studios'.

I wonder whether the developer took this restaurant owner for a ride, or the restaurant owner jilted the developer who got back at them. Either way…

In case anyone’s wondering how today’s going, my wife’s feeling ill, so I threw on a stained, torn t-shirt for to fetch her favourite breakfast—cheese kransky—only to arrive at the supermarket a full hour before it opened. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Schloss Johannisberg, Rheingau Musik Festival: Alexander Malofeev, Klavier
I'm left to wonder about his finale, Skrjabin's Fantasie h-Moll op. 28. The hall got warm by the end. I suspect it got to this otherwise superb young pianist (along with a cellphone ringing during Listz's Funérailles). He played the Fantasie for 3–4 minutes. It's described as lasting ca. 9 minutes and requiring the full, immense skill of the performer while stretching the limits of the instrument…

Interesting testimonies, I wonder what the men* think about "dating in 2025” (whether you're in the USA, like in the article, or elsewhere..)?
Generally, maybe people would be more happy if they paired up with someone else independently of that person's gender, but focusing more on shared values and goals? Our societies are very "husband & wife" - oriented, but they don't have to!

As we were touring potential new office locations earlier today, a coworker mentioned to a potential landlord that our office had a kitchen before Google existed.
So I felt obliged to share that my recollection was that when Google was small, they wrote us and said that they had noticed that we had a chef and wondered how that was working out for us. We said we loved it!
(They knew us because our web browser @…
