This looks very useful but I‘m reluctant to share this. Every computer tip that is just „open an admin terminal and enter this command that executes stuff right from a github URL“ is dangerous. Even if that one is OK - it teaches people that this kind of thing is not a super red flag for malware exploits. https://toot.communi…
»Why Shortened URLs Pose a Security Risk«
On Mastodon / Fediverse, shortening the URL is not necessary at all, because they are not marked in their full length. Apart from the shorter tracking, their data collection frenzy as well as their timing is also very inconvenient.

When Sir Tim Berners-Leeinvented the world wide web in 1989,
his vision was clear:
it would used by everyone,
filled with everything and,
crucially, it would be free.
Today, the British computer scientist’s creation is regularly used by 5.5 billion people
– and bears little resemblance to the democratic force for humanity he intended.
In Australia to promote his book, "This is for Everyone",
Berners-Lee is reflecting on what his inven…

I started using MeTube which is a web-based front-end for yt-dlp. It runs on my NAS and I can easily use a browser to feed it URLs that then get dumped directly to a share on my network.

On this #Thanksgiving, I’m thankful for all the people that came before us, and left us this beautiful earth to live on. I want to share it with all our descendants to come as well.
I’m thankful for *you*, for giving it your best to make the social web a success. I want to preserve this vision of the web, and share it with my son when he once comes of age.
Happy New Year 2026 to all of our followers, readers, and contributors!
We would like to thank you all for your support since 2018; we exist through and thanks to your support.
Please share your favorite articles on social media, and if you feel so inclined, we would appreciate your help in keeping the web server running with a monetary contribution.
All the best to you and your loved ones in 2026. Let us _really_ make a better world through software.
My toots are getting too long and I sometimes want to share more than just (but also) my tech ramblings.
With all that metal running just fine, it's time to do sth else. And more.
The two excellent write-ups below pushed me over the brink, website and blog time!

This message is intended for Canadian #Mastodon admins who are running public instances large and small. If you are an admin, please share with your counterparts. If you are a member of a Canadian instance, please send this to your admin.
A small group of us (Note: really, really small) are in early discussions on how to encourage our government - individual politicians & federal, provincial, and municipal departments - to move their social media presence to Mastodon. This would involve an awareness campaign targeting politicians, party HQs, and departments/agencies.
We are asking for input from admins to help us create a future state vision for this project, and provide us with advice or ideas on how to bring it to a reality. I will set up a web call within the next 3 weeks and hopefully you can participate. We are not asking you to contribute beyond input. Please DM me and I will add you to the invitees.

I've been worried AI will crowd out human voices, and now an AI copy has replaced my 2006 Connected Knowledge site, warping context and displacing the original work online. Can we stop this creeping ensloppification?

by making my phone terrible with iOS 26 Apple solved my problem of figuring out how to share my notes without iCloud: I won’t.

I have a trick I call "The 1920 Method".
I resize most images to 1920 pixels wide before I post them to Mastodon or to my own web site. This has allowed me to keep things small, and fast, and not have to increase server space or feel like I'm putting a burden on other systems.
You'd be surprised how many images we share online work just fine at lower resolution.
