@inthehands@hachyderm.ioI’ve been thinking a lot about the gulf between people who think LLMs can cut 90% of the cost of software development or whatever and people who think that’s a pile of catastrophes balanced on top of a nonsense wish.
I think a lot of that chasm boils down to the fact that software is already •terrible•, and people have very different feelings about that. I don't just mean “Liquid Glass is ugly” terrible; I mean “it’s broken and insecure and unreliable and just doesn't flipping WORK” terrible, like Arbiter Sports.
We are right now in a war between people who think software should treat humans humanely and people who are perfectly willing to offload their development costs onto captive users in the form of wasted time, anger, anxiety, and other forms of personal harm even more severe than those. That war was raging well before LLMs entered the picture, but LLMs drove it to fever pitch. I’m extremely skeptical of the idea that LLMs make any significant positive contribution to the long-term speed or cost of writing •good• software, but they clearly have the potential to lower the floor for •bad• software to unheard-of levels at unheard-of speeds. How you feel about that fact probably predicts a lot about how you feel about the “LLMs can 10x software dev!” hype.

Which is of course a terrible idea.
These languages exist to make it easier write safe and efficient code, that's maintainable and editable and doesn't allow out of bounds memory pointing or leaks or whatever else.
Writing in machine language would be worse for the AI for the same reasons. It would make fore more unmaintainable, buggy, crashy, unmodular code.
The web is filled with training data written in those languages and pretty much no training data at all on how to write functions in 68000 or z80 or whatever.
You could build some training data by compiling all that high level language and training instead on the results of that.
But then you're just trying to get the buggy, lossy, neural network to learn to compile the high level code into machine language. Which it will do much worse than an actual compiler already written.
Pointless silly idea people.

Much of the opining about developer backlash to LLMs falls into two loose theoretical categories:
(1) Labor problem: developers now experience employment threat, loss of job security, layoffs, new levels of worry about the future
(2) Identity problem: developers used to feel special because generating code was placed on a cultural pedestal (sign of a special third brain lobe or whatever), that perceived specialness was a pillar of our personal identity, and now our egos are bruised because machines can do it and we don’t feel special anymore
While there’s doubtless truth to both of those in some / many cases, I posit a third theory:
(3) Purpose problem: contrary to popular belief, developers actually care quite a lot about the people who use our software and we derive a sense of purpose and meaning from doing what we believe to be good work; the current environment undermines that, not just LLMs but LLMs as part of a broader vortex of enshittification, and our world is effectively saying “everything you cared about doesn't matter, you can't hope to fight to make it matter, and you are stupid for caring”
I think there's evidence for that last theory in the kinds of despair you hear from developers: not just anxiety about paying the bills, not just angry feather-puffing, but a kind of existential despair that comes from the unraveling of one’s internal sense of purpose and meaning.

If you have the dataset to verify you've written a good structured question for Jev, why wouldn't you use that dataset to train your own classifier? From day 1, the notion of "civilized" nations contrasted against "barbarians" was propaganda for empire, and it still is.
When you observe that those who called themselves "civilized" were more violent and destructive than those they called "barbarians", or that the standard of living for their poor was much worse, or whatever other glimpse through the lies you want to share, if you do that by calling empires "barbarians" or their victims "civilized" you're demonstrating that you haven't yet moved beyond the idea of that distinction: that some folks are "civilized" and this superior to others in light of their "civility". But it's not civility that makes a society better; it's justice, happiness, peace, etc., and civility is often the enemy of those things, both in the "access to luxuries (without regard to their cost)" and the "avoiding strenuous disagreement (and thus shushing those attempting to hold power to account)" senses. The things that make empires bad are also easy to denounce: violence, oppression, corruption, etc.

(On the plus side, changing the belt is not as hard as it looks on most sites; on my model you just have to undo two extra screws at the back and the whole drum moves backwards, you don't need to dismantle the whole of the back.)

There are ALL KINDS of workarounds, like the /dev/disk/by-whatever tree and mounting with UUIDs, but nothing equivalent to what network devices have with `biosdevname`. Consequently, every time I boot my desktop, it's a toss-up if the boot drive will be /dev/nvme0 or /dev/nvme1. Purely cosmetic, but aggravating!
