The Marines and National Guard shouldn't be deployed to protests in LA, Texas or anywhere else.
But since they are, the Freedom of the Press Foundation and other press freedom groups wrote a letter to them explaining the basics of journalists' rights when covering demonstrations, and offering their help.

This week, we were discussing the central question Can we "predict" a word? as the basis for statistical language models in our #ISE2025 lecture. Of course, I wasx trying Shakespeare quotes to motivate the (international) students to complement the quotes with "predicted" missing words ;-)
"All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely...."

Slide from the Information Service Engineering 2025 lecture, Natural Language Processing 03, 2.10 Language Models. The Slide shows a graphical portrait of William Shakespeare (created by midjourney AI) as an ink sketch with yellow accents. The text states "Can we "predict" a word?"

We've got buried treasure on view in a new display at the museum. Thanks to a recent gift and the work of a consultant and a staff member, we're displaying mingqi, or "spirit goods," in two adjoining cases in the permanent collection. Read on to learn more about how this grouping of well-preserved objects came together.

A color photograph of a Bactrian camel mingqi, or Chinese grave good. The camel has its right front knee on the ground, meaning that the bottom of its neck grazes the ground, and it holds its head up high. You can see remnants of colorful paint on its saddle and hair.

It has become relatively easy & affordable to put together an LED Matrix sign. Recently I put together a 6 panel display using 1/8 scan modules for something much brighter than the 1/16 & 1/32 scan modules I usually use. It's bright enough to carry around in high noon sunlight. (I wish it were brighter still)
For past projects with realtime graphics, I've used hzeller's raspberry pi library. Here I used the Huidu HD-D16 controller board that seems to be ARM FPGA …

Charlot hung out on the UGA campus for three years in the early 1940s, teaching and working with students. His murals that were inside what was once UGA's journalism building recently underwent some restoration thanks to our museum and the help of a lot of people from across campus.

Claude Sonnet 4.0 describes the image as: "I can see four men in what appears to be an outdoor, rocky or cave-like setting with vegetation around them. They're wearing what looks like futuristic or science fiction-style clothing in muted colors - dark and earth tones. The scene has a gritty, dramatic quality typical of 1970s science fiction television production. The lighting and atmosphere suggest this might be during an action sequence or tense moment in the story. The setting appears rough a…

Last year, we bought a collection of 17 Georgia paintings by 19th- and 20th-century artists, many of whom are lesser known. Even the ones who are better known, like #NellChoateJones, aren't exactly _well_ known. We're excited to start studying these works and learning about the Georgia scenes many of them show.

Nell Choate Jones' painting "Square at St. Mary's," a color scene that shows a Black family in a southern square, next to a big tree. They could be in front of a church. Most of them are wearing white.
Augusta Oelschig's painting of a young Black boy in a gold frame. She shows him at bust length, looking slightly to his left. He wears a pale blue shirt with an open collar.
A watercolor painting of Savannah by Hattie Saussy. Seen from a park it shows several four- or five-story brick buildings across the way, partially blocked by greenery. The image is soft and pastel, more abstract in the foreground and more precise in the background.

Claude Sonnet 4.0 describes the image as: "I can see two people in what appears to be a dramatic scene set in a barren, post-apocalyptic landscape. They're positioned among tall, dried grass with bare, twisted trees in the background, creating a desolate atmosphere. Both figures are wearing dark clothing that fits the somber tone of the setting. The scene has the distinctive visual style of 1970s British science fiction television, with its characteristic lighting and outdoor filming techniques…
