In German, the letters 's', 'ss', and 'ß' all represent a voiceless 's' sound,
but their usage depends on the preceding vowel's length and the word's structure.
Generally, 's' is used when the vowel before it is long,
'ss' is used after a short vowel,
and 'ß' (eszett or sharp s) is used after a long vowel or diphthong.

What’s really fascinating about this graph is that used Tesla prices started plummeting circa fall 2022, about the time Musk wrecked Twitter, 2.5 years •before• the #TeslaTakedown movement started.
What’s killing Tesla? It’s not just the protests. The brand was already fundamental damaged. Protests simply gave coherence to a disgust that was •already• powerful and widespread.
Musk is permanently radioactive. Institutional investors take note — and get out while you can.

Concentration Camp Labor

TIMOTHY SNYDER
JUL 04, 2025
With the passage of Trump's death bill, we face the prospect of many great harms, including an archipelago of concentration camps across the United States.

Concentration camps are sites of tempting slave labor. Among many other aims, the Soviets used concentration camp labor to build canals and work mines. The Nazi German concentration camp systemfollowed a capitalist version of the same logic: it drew in businesses with…

Content warning: "age verification" practicalities

Really good explanation from @…, laying out various problems and risks with trying to implement "age verification" online.
"Firstly, in order to prove your age you’re being asked to hand over some fairly important personal details. ... Usually the company you’re handing these details to is a third party, often one you will never have heard of before. ...
"The data that is being collected for age verification purposes is extremely tempting to hackers ... and at the moment there is no specific regulation outlining the security standards that these companies should meet ...
"Let’s say all the current age verification providers are incredibly robust, though. ... The question still remains... should you be sharing this information with random websites anyway?
"... once you’ve trained the population of an entire country to routinely hand over their credit card details in order to access content, you have given them an incredibly bad habit that it’s going to be tough to break. ... You don’t just prove your age once, after all, you potentially have to do it dozens of times, to access a bunch of different websites. Everything from BlueSky to PornHub to Spotify and even maybe Wikipedia. It becomes a weekly or perhaps monthly occurrence. Just as individual users don’t tend to read every website’s terms and conditions, it’s unlikely they’re all going to do due diligence checks on every provider who asks for ID, especially once they’ve become used to just handing that data over.
"And although that may not be a problem for _you_, you tech-savvy cleverclogs, if you’ve ever found yourself in the position of unpaid IT support for one of your less knowledgeable friends or relatives, hopefully you can see why it’s a huge problem for the UK population more broadly."
And more!

❝We humans are stability-seeking creatures. Getting accustomed to what used to seem unthinkable can feel like an accomplishment. And when the unthinkable recedes at least a bit…it’s easy to mistake it for proof that the dark times are ending.
But these comparatively small victories don’t alter the direction of our transformation — they don’t even slow it down measurably — even while they appeal to our deep need to normalize.…And so just when we most need to act — while there is indeed room for action and some momentum to the resistance — we tend to be lulled into complacency by the sense of relief on the one hand and boredom on the other.❞

We issue updates for software, why not for decisions?
Yes, it could lead to uncertainties if used more than rarely.
But imagine if the court could re-open the Dred Scott or Korematsu decisions and change the original?
Git hubs could accommodate this.

I did briefly use a version of Debian Testing on one of my computers a few months ago, but in the end it didn't work quite as well as the now almost finished version Trixie. So there are noticeable differences between Testing and a stable release, hehe!
No, what I mean is that many users use Debian Testing as their everyday system and apparently have no problems with it, unlike me. But of course, a lot depends on the hardware used and the state of development. Anyway, one thing is…

Special Sensor Microwave Imager Sounder, or SSMIS, rides on a series of satellites and allows forecasters to see a storm’s structure,
which might otherwise be invisible.
The Hurricane Hunter planes that fly into storms can be used to generate three-dimensional storm images, but the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which is responsible for hurricane forecasting, has only two of those aircraft.
They can’t be everywhere at once.

A 130,000-year-old archaeological site in southern California, USA
The Cerutti Mastodon site is, to our knowledge, the oldest in situ, well-documented archaeological site in North America and, as such, substantially revises the timing of arrival of Homo into the Americas.

Horses lived in North America for millions of years
but went extinct at the end of the last ice age, about 11,000 years ago.
