Chen-Ning Yang (often known in the US as “Frank”) passed away in Beijing yesterday at the age of 103.
He was the last of the great figures of 1950s high-energy particle physics still with us.
His name is associated with two of the central ideas of what was to become the Standard Model.

(I grew up in LA during the 1950s and '60s, so I saw a lot of Zorro shows on TV - so I like Californio style hats with a colorful band and a stampede string.)

I am these cost 25¢ per song years old.
I wonder how much the artists got paid being played on these compared to Spotify or any of the other streaming services? Assuming they did in fact get paid.
Think how annoying it is when some AH plays their phone on speaker. Now imagine a diner full of tables all playing their own tunes on speaker (the only way you could).

A 1950s material just set a modern record for lightning-fast chips
Researchers engineered a strained germanium layer on silicon that allows charge to move faster than in any silicon-compatible material to date. This record mobility could lead to chips that run cooler, faster, and with dramatically lower energy consumption. The discovery also enhances the prospects for silicon-based quantum devices.

Well this is a fun loft find; The logo on the lid seems to be an exact match to Iraqi Republic Railways; the body seems to match a William Adams sugar pot from sometime 1950s onwards. It's not entirely crazy,p the Brits built some infrastructure in Iraq in the 50s.
