Saigon still, even as a megapole, has some almost countryside like areas. But the skyscrapers are rolling in.
On the right hand side you see a glimpse of the Zoo, opened to the public in 1869, making it one of the oldest ones in the world.

Setting a caged animal free is good for your karma.
That's why you can find cages filled with little birds for sale at the bigger Buddhist temples here in Saigon.
To sell them, you'll have to catch them first. So, in many trees lining a canal here, you'll hear birds chirping away.
Or is it the mp3 player you hear?
On the left you see a small cage, filled with birds that were lured in there by the mp3 player (in a little plastic bag) on the right of the photo. Difficult to spot, but you'll get there.
During the week cages are picked up and rotated out for empty ones.

After 1975 especially the DDR came to help the Vietnamese with the construction of, mainly concrete, apartments. They still exist today and you can find them scattered all over Saigon.
