It's amazing how bad I am at estimating how long simple tasks* will take.
I had a nearly finished manuscript. I just needed to tidy a few things in it and then upload for review
Two hours tops I told my family.
5.5 hours later...

Last night I dreamt that the most conservative, old-fashioned, stickler-for-the-way-things-have-always-been colleague* did her evaluation of the candidates for our faculty opening entirely in emojis 🤪 Wild
*You know who that is in your department! #academicChatter
It's taken me most of the day, but I am finally down to fewer than 250 emails in my inbox. Loads of different tasks dealt with too - I guess I should go to bed now, but I also really need to finish this paper now...

The one single thing, in the last 15 years, that helped the most in organzing myself and structuring my scientific work was learning and using markdown.
No fancy tool or software solution, just some additional characters in a text file changed so much for me.
I was able to grasp it in a minute, saw the benefit after some weeks. Try it and give it time.

Pro tip: don't give the office next to the elevators to the faculty member who no one has seen on campus for the better part of a decade. And, if the movers just dumped his stuff in the middle of the office, say in 2018, it's not too late to have someone put it away or at least hang a curtain over the window from the hall.

Another project proposal reviewed, another four hours of community service for a foreign funding agency, and, unfortunately, another bad proposal.
It’s frustrating having to recommend projects to be rejected, but hopefully the funder can use the money to support better projects.

Anyone know of good articles on solipsism in games, especially with regards to game engine design and level design? Feels so obvious someone must have written on this before but Google scholar is not coming up with a lot.
(boosts appreciated)

On the second day of this brandnew spring term, I got two grant propsals rejected 🙅♀️ 🙅♀️
There’s only one good thing—it’s not the start of a Fibonacci series of rejections as I couldn’t output so many applications in the first place. Phew 😮💨

Worked late on a paper today: I have a target to submit 3 before June, which I have been working on in parallel. I sometimes wonder if it would be more efficient to do them one at a time. But much of my job is project work, usually several in parallel, so it's not always possible...
What do you do?

Interesting piece on the fragmenting of digital identities in the sciences. I'm sure mine is scattered all over the place.
The key seems to be to keep your ORCID up to date. - and as a model, there are many similarities between ORCID and the fediverse,
"keep your ORCID profile up to date... it is controlled by the researcher, portable across institutions and designed to connect to publishers, funders and organizational systems... makes your ORCID page a stable reference point.."

Today between teaching sessions: students exchange what they stream, hockey or curling?
S1: But you’re Swiss, you need to watch hockey!
S2: But in curling we still have options!
S1:
S2: I mean, the women have options in both 😁
S1: 😐
S2: Honestly, curling is more exciting, the Swiss Women team will win hockey anyway
S1: But yoy need to stream hockey!

I'm worried that if I don't come up with some batshit or vaguely antisocial behavior quick, they're going to make me take on more consequential admin work. The bar for appointment as chair really is wildly low.

Someone in another country apparently gave their students the task to reproduce one of our studies but gave them no guidance on how to do it 😬 I'm really sorry, not-my-students but I can't give you individual tutoring on experimental methods, data analysis, Python and statistics this week. Sorry your prof sucks 🙃 #academicChatter
It’s literally part of my job to review proposals, but this doesn’t mean that I don’t have better things to do.
Especially when someone writes in the very last paragraph, “btw, I don’t actually want a professorship, because that would limit my freedom to do what I want.”
Well then, do what you want, but stop wasting my and other reviewers’ time!

RE: #UKRI funding for UK #research. "Change leadership", eh?
#AcademicChatter
A Wiley Journal in Analysis (!!) sent me a referee request for a paper whose title is so absurd that I guess it's slop. It asks me to write the review within 14 days. I'm not working in the area and don't understand the abstract at all.
So I think the whole editorial decision process is also slop?
The review invitation does contain a reminder that I'm not allowed to upload the manuscript to any LLM!
Now what? Decline?Just archive the e-mail without clicking on any links?

If you’re about to submit a paper to an established (!) conference, please not only read the call for papers—yes, READ it—but have a look at previous proceedings. Please!
“But I spent so much time writing this” doesn’t make a paper fit the scope

Just proofread a paper which contains a sentence to be hopefully cited over and over. You get it here first:
“Which would be a good thing, if true.” (Mahlow 2026, p. 6)
The paper will appear in late summer, I hope

Anyone have any clue where I can get a measuring tape for sea ice in Europe? The only supplier I have found is the very lovely and friendly Kovacs, but they are US based and the cost and time for delivery are crazy.
