Haha guess who has two thumbs and somehow agreed to give TWO extra lectures in the last week before the break 🤪 #academicChatter
I'm worried that if I don't come up with some batshit or vaguely antisocial behavior quick, they're going to make me take on more consequential admin work. The bar for appointment as chair really is wildly low.

Two hours into the review that I was unable to do this morning due to admin urgencies, I'm happy to report that I’ve already filled out 2 of 5 sections of the review form (I don’t mean this sarcastically, this is a huge project that’s part of an even huger project, so this kind of review—which will also involve a panel meeting at the funder’s headquarters—is absolutely justified).
I guess I’m entitled to a dinner break…

I very briefly feared that the number of printed exams wouldn’t suffice 😱 But it turns out German students are reliable when it comes to not showing up for exams phew
And only 1 copy printed in vain! 🌱 #academicchatter
An evening discussing falling enrollment in #STEM courses at universities across Europe, especially traditional studies like chemistry, geology and meteorology. I wonder if young people are unaware of just how interesting #STEM careers to be? Or do they have the perception it's "too hard" compared to other subjects where easier grades may be had? Or is it simply they think they can have "better"* jobs in other fields?

*Where better might mean higher paid, more prestigious, more certain of employment, or less workload or some combination of all of these... ?
Managed to finish a bunch of annoying items on my to do list, including some long-ignored emails, but unfortunately tomorrow's 8am lecture was not among them yet /o\ #academicChatter
I know, I know, I should not send work-related messages after office hours. But sometimes I forget to schedule the delivery for “tomorrow at nine.”
But then, colleagues (yes, plural!) accepting meetings at 23:14, what’s wrong with YOU?

Yesterday was my last day of this term's teaching Communication at the School of Engineering. So time to say good by to the little fellow living in TH547 and attending all lectures! He was there even on days none of the 33 students showed up

7 meetings since 10am 😓 oof
I feel a little brained out #academicChatter
#academicchatter

Why put effort into writing your thesis when you can put in the same amount of effort into making it look as if you had written it?

Just finished and submitted my “preliminary statement” for the foreign funding agency. #Orgmode tells me that I’ve worked for 3:52 on this task, which means that my estimate (half a day) was pretty accurate…

Scheduling yearly review meetings with the team (for January/February, 'cause December is wayyy to crowded for that) #academicChatter
SNF (Switzerland) restrictions proposed: only 1 concurrent research grant per PI (plus maybe one coop), only 1 proposal per year.
🔥 Hot take (since I'm not at all operating like this currently): I actually think this might be a good idea? It would curb some of the biggest "research mills", where one PI has a huge pyramid scheme underneath them, and might encourage more careful grant proposals, slower science. And might even put more emphasis back into the basic research funding (instead of the grant lotteries)?
(Maybe naive, I know, and I have no idea how this would be implemented)

Another meeting about how to manage/facilitate/moderate students' use of "AI" 🥱 #academicChatter
I was on vacation the last two and a half weeks and I did NOT do any work, not even a little bit, for 14 days. Not finishing a paper, not grading, no grant applications, no reviews. This is what it was like and it was glorious. Special thanks to my parents-in-law for the all-inclusive pampering #academicChatter #break
I get this mail about once a week now. Coming from some private e-mail address at hotmail, firemail, gmail, ... Subject: "Unsolicited application as Materials Scientist." or similar with different field (never maths) The senders are also different each time and the "values in the form" too, but the layout and text are always the same.
What is it? Too little variation for LLMs. It must be some software or service that markets sending this spam to people looking for jobs?
