If I find the paper super interesting, it's probably too complex to present to my intro class, huh? #academicChatter
(rhetorical question, I've been teaching for >20 years, no need for non-mutuals to help 😘 )

I'm acting chair again this week. I'm thinking of changing my signature to: "I'm not a chair, but I play one on email."

I'll take that, in any language!

How do people get asked to write "perspectives" for a paper that is just getting out? Is it usually reviewers of said paper? Is it the editor who asks them about it? Can you invite a colleague to write something on your own paper?
#AcademicChatter
Another reason not to publish in #Frontiers... they use genAI to create alt-text for their figures 🤦
Seriously, remind me why we are paying journals when they can't even write their own Alt-text?

A foreign funder just informed me that “the applicant has decided to withdraw the proposal from the competition. As a result, the review will unfortunately no longer be required. Please accept our sincere apologies for any inconvenience this may cause.”
I’m happy to assure you that this doesn't cause me any inconvenience.

Yeah, sure SpringerNature.
BTW, I'm 'showcasing' my publications on my homepage. ALL of them, including those with serious publishers.

1.5 weeks into a 3 week holiday* and I can feel now just how much I needed it.
And how little I want to go back to work in August.
Let's hope the second half of the holiday fixes that.
#AcademicChatter
*yes I know, I am incredibly fortunate to get to take 3 weeks of summer holiday off, but the feeling of utter burnout is also real.
Spring term is over! At least the teaching part

New international PhD student (starting tomorrow!) stopped by to sign their contract. I gave some intro into matters of bureaucracy (I always warn international people that we do love our forms here in Germany!). Stressed the importance of taking the official vacation days. Answer, without hesitation "oh yes, I'll be definitely taking those!" #academicChatter #theKidsAreAlright

Wow, look at the value added by a Journal formatting this article, that probably cost a couple of thousand € taxpayers money. #rant #academicchatter #sorry_not_sorry
That will be a first:
I wrote a contribution to a Festschrift for the retirement of the director of our school. To be published with deGruyter. Yes, I know, I know. But we also publish our textbook with them, so, OK. And it’s OA, at least
Last week the Contributor Terms Agreement came. WTAF! I deleted several phrases and whole paragraphs. Expecting either no reaction or forcing me to withdraw the article

Offboarding meeting. New people joining means "old" people leaving... Great new opportunities for them but a little bit *sigh* for me #academicChatter
Currently making some tutorials for our next hackathon - should I upload them to codeberg (and make the students use that)? Or github (where they almost certainly already have accounts)?

What a day! Spent 3 hours with a MA student to finish our pilot experiment for her research project (it’s launched!), meeting 1 with former current PhD students on paper edits, meeting 2a b with another current PhD student on paper edits slides for a talk (different topic), meeting 3 with a future PhD student and their second supervisor on “what it means to do a PhD”, then 7 meetings with students on their term paper topics. 😅 All made possible by the fact that virtually all of German academia is on vacation, so I received a single digit number of actionable emails today #academicChatter
“No paper is useless, it can still serve as bad example.” But it still cost me over 2 h, without counting the time discussing it with my PhD student—which was actually time well spent, as he learned something about reviewing.

My very first sabbatical (a full year! 🤩) is starting to look real, so I'd better start making some plans. Any tips from fellow academics? Do's and Don't's? #academicChatter
About to write the funnest part of my "instructions for term papers and BA/MA theses" for my students - the new "how not to use AI" part 🙃 #academicChatter
Yes, I've eaten my lunch sandwich and all the snacks at 11:37 (again). It's that kind of day, don't judge me #academicChatter

Interdisciplinary collaboration can be so eye-opening. I just heard a speaker say off-hand "Oh yeah, this is really new work, from 2017" 😅 I think my colleagues in #NLProc wouldn't even touch such historic sources #academicChatter

Dear colleagues, if you send me a review request on Friday at 9:30pm, please don’t have your system send me a “reminder” on Sunday at 8am 🙄🙄 #academicchatter #reviewing
“I don’t understand the purpose of this course in the curriculum. What are we supposed to have learned or retained by the end?”
Yeah, good question. It’s not like I spent practically the entire first session explaining the course objectives.

I've finally finished "Katabasis" and find it again eerily accurate when it comes to relationships in academia. Also, of course I'm biased because the main character is a linguist 🤩 I'm getting my dad, the philosopher, to read it to let me know what he thinks of the philosophy parts 😅 #darkAcademia #academicChatter
For a long time, I diligently put my course materials into #git, but I found that it has little, if any, benefits for my use case, most notably, working alone.
But I’m now in the lucky position that others will teach my courses for the next academic year (#sabbatical, yay!)—now it does make sense to use version control!

Academic publishers charge 36 Euros for a chapter from a book that is older than me (very close to 50 years old). I mean #academicChatter
