New superpower unlocked: procrastinate until a solution suggests itself over night. I think I'll change my middle name to “Calvin”?

Funny the people who have their airdrop open to anyone - I just almost dropped my annotated version of my student's PhD thesis into a random stranger's device 😅 #academicChatter
Just bundled up my interactive lab notebook system for an open-source release; it's just a panflute filter but has some cool functionality if you want to make little interactive tutorials that live as standalone static pages without any server app necessary beyond a basic host. You can check out an example here:

Unexpected good news on the grant funding front...
Means I can stop worrying about how we're going to pay the best polar regional climate modelling team in the world™️ for the next 3 years and focus on doing some actually really good, cool science™️.
To be continued...

Yesterday, we talked with controlling about the budget of our unit for 2026. Acquisition of third party funding for this and that, balance, etc.
Each professorship has to get CHF 80'000 per year, it's part of the performance evaluation—of course we need way more to fund all members of the group

Best kind of meeting 🤩 : Got to offer an excellent student a PhD position in an upcoming project 💪 That will be fantastic... #academicChatter
This is the first time a book I've contributed to has gotten the subway platform publicity treatment.

Just one more course, a Zoom call, a meeting with a prospective PhD student, and a thesis defense—and I'm already done for this week.

Said goodbye to two people in my lab today: my first employee & (completed) PhD student our admin assistant 😢 all the emotions... 😭 🤩
That's another side of academic mobility - every few years a lab has to completely reinvent itself... that's tough #academicChatter
Genuinely interested in any thoughts as to where to send it next. The subject is Antarctica and influences on observed ice sheet change

Workation, day one: headset fell apart
So, no online meetings for the next view weeks, I guess?

Why learn good time management, when you can achieve the same with abject self-exploitation? #academicChatter
Started the semester with a delay of two weeks, but I think the first two courses today (“Computing in Context” and “Histoire de l’informatique”) went pretty well.
I’ve totally redesigned them and I’ll make use of index cards for in-class writing in both courses. Let’s see how this works out.

firsts: In a few minutes we're starting my first PhD defense as first supervisor 🤩 #academicChatter
Update after talking to the student office: The student had called the student office and then chose to ignore essentially everything they had been told; and then they basically lied to us about having officially submitted the thesis.
Good thing I don’t trust anyone anymore.

I was yesterday's years old when I learned that applying for and accessing #HPC infrastructure directly via the #EU ( #EuroHPC_JU ) is, at least on paper, much easier than going via the national resources in #Denmark.
It's great, but figuring that out earlier could have saved me easily 3 months of writing emails and waiting.

Regulations: The MA thesis must be submitted at least 30 days before the date of the defense.
Student (sending me their thesis 1 week before the end of the exam period, after months of total radio silence): Yeah, but I really want to defend it next Friday, otherwise I’d lose a whole semester!!!1!11

And while I expect this case to get back on track (with just some delay), situations like this can potentially go downhill fast.

Not one, not a single one, of the invoices for our summer school was just paid by the uni's finance admin. All without exception led to further inquiries and additional rounds back-and-forth before being cleared. Including the one asking for reimbursement for a jigsaw puzzle (priced 10 Euro 💰) which we did as a group activity (but needed checking whether it may have been a gift, and for whom?! #academicChatter #bigSigh #whatIsMyTimeWorth
Mailed a few people: “Please provide input for subject A in this document [link] and for subject B in this document [link] in our shared SwitchDrive folder” (Yes, everyone involved has access to it!)
Resulting in my inbox exploding with reply-to-alls mixing both subjects, commenting on some of the ideas mentioned, lengthy praising of each other, etc.
What’s wrong with people?
