FOR SALE- “Demimondaine”. Acrylic on hot press watercolor paper, 8 x 8 in. Painted using Posca acrylic markers.
Trying something new with this portrait of Cléo de Mérode. She was a French dancer (active from 1886-1924) who debuted at the Paris Opera at only 11 years old. By 19 she was already a famous beauty, and the first woman ever whose photos were distributed worldwide.
The title for this piece is a term that was used in French society to call women promiscuous, basically courtesans. de Mérode dealt with multiple scandals that attached that insult to her, for accusations that she denied. Despite them, she remained successful.
I wanted to paint her as soon as I came across a photo of her while browsing Reddit the other day. Working from black-and-white historical photos allows me to be freer with my colors, and I definitely went a bit wild here but I really love how it turned out. This woman was an exceptional beauty, and an exceptional color palette suits her features.

Painted the pick guard for my husband's electric guitar to show our cat Danny, and his toy fish.
Primed with acrylic gesso, painted with Posca paint markers, sealed with glossy acrylic varnish. My husband has been playing on it for three weeks now and the painting looks perfect, so I expect it to be durable.
May be some of my proudest work to date!
