Good lord, I did a DIY thing and it just worked! Nothing extra broke, no tiles fell off the wall, no extra items had to be hastily purchased. This timeline is definitely suspect.
Also, I now own a pair of vice-grip pliers, and I'm casting my eye around the house for other things that might need to be gripped very tightly.
