"Heat from El Niño can warm oceans off West Antarctica – and melt floating ice shelves from below"

This really is not good. If the wind patterns continue to shift to bring lower latitude air to the Antarctic, this will accelerate the loss of polar ice and make the ecosystem changes happening there more abrupt.

"Only 15% of [Antarctic ice shelf] pinning points [where floating ice shelves ground on topographic highs on the sea bed] reduced from 1973 to 1989, before increasing to 25% from 1989 to 2000 and 37% from 2000 to 2022. A continuation of this trend would further reduce the buttressing potential of ice shelves, enhancing ice discharge and accelerating the contribution of Antarctica to sea-level rise."

In Greenland we have the @… to keep a near real-time view on what's going on with the ice sheet , in #Antarctic we don't really have quite the same thing, but I'm happy to announce that our data and that of some colleagues from Belgium is now presented on a #SCAR #AntClimNow webpage. Some details are still misisng, and I'll probably blog next week what it all means - but for now you can see what's going on here:

"Climate models can’t explain 2023’s huge heat anomaly — we could be in uncharted territory
Taking into account all known factors, the planet warmed 0.2 °C more last year than climate scientists expected. More and better data are urgently needed."
Good piece in Nature this week by Gavin Schmidt covers the extremely anomalous temperatures in 2023, well before El Nino got started as well as the loss of
On subject of #Antarctica, today our #HorizonEurope project @… welcomes a new partner: National Antarctic Science Center of #Ukraine join us thanks to the #EU widening access programme.
They will deploy new instruments in the oceans around the continent, closing the gap in observations and making us a truly circum-Antarctic project as well as running advanced state-of-the-art models of under ice shelf melting.
Welcome 🇺🇦 friends 🤗🇦🇶
