the best non-medical feature about West Coast General Hospital is definitely the atrium/waiting room.
Nice natural light. Running water. Naturally planted foliage. Calming, quiet and comfortable even though all around the edges it is go go go.
I am waiting for Tree to finish her MRI. It is a mobile unit that attends WCGH for three weeks, then goes to other hospitals for 7 weeks i think, on a rotation. It is not fancy. you have to go outside to access it which really sucks in the cold and rain.
But it is there and makes a big difference.

also found this excellent article about the motor developer, MagniX. It has some great technical info, delving into just how much more efficient the electric motors are compared to the piston and turboprop engines that they are replacing.
“a single magni500 Electric Propulsion Unit [the engine, inverter and cables], which weighs 185 kg… produces up to 560 kW. By comparison, the Pratt & Whitney R-985 Wasp Junior SB engine replaced in the eBeaver weighed 290 kg (not including oil) and produced just 300 kW.”

Relevant to today's hand-wringing about jet fuel costs:
I was trolling around looking for an update on Harbour Air's eBeaver project (electric conversion for their DHC-2 "Beaver" commercial/passenger fleet) and the latest I have found and most comprehensive on the state of development is here.

the engineering article about the motors is super in depth, some of it way over my head, but they also compare the development of EV cars to planes and I get this... at least now... because it didn't occur to me:
Regeneration is great for cars!
Regeneration is a BIG NO for airplanes! Because if you glide and the propeller to regenerate power, you fall out of the sky. 😬 😂
so ya, none of that!
"Critically, one area the company worked hard on reducing was regeneration. At no point during flight, as well as descent, can the plane simply carry on under its own momentum while air drives the propellers to generate current. That would create a large amount of drag, and the plane would start to fall rapidly.
“Maybe a glider or UAV could do that, but not a passenger aircraft,” Armesmith says. “There are rules against it in aerospace, so we have to actively stop regeneration from being possible, it’s a fault we have to arrest,” Armesmith says.
“So, if we’ve either lost power or had to turn the motor off for any reason, the propeller needs to be able to windmill freely. We can’t have any electromagnetic resistance to the propeller free-turning owing to regeneration back into the DC bus.”
ya... glide good! fall bad! lol
I am very glad these very smart people are making it happen and a local company is right in there!!

BC's strategy was doomed to fail because, like nearly every government program in BC and Canada, there is a deep reluctance to increase spending and taxation to create actual capacity and capability in government.
The BC Government thought they could just decriminalize a few drugs and maybe put in some ‘targeted' funding here and there that would eventually shift to the private or charity sector.
It was never going to work. This was not a failure of the Portugal method in BC, it was an unwillingness to actually implement everything Portugal did to have success.
"Portugal’s drug strategy paired decriminalization with a massive, coordinated investment in treatment, housing, and social support, whereas B.C.’s decriminalization came without enough detox beds, long-term treatment, supportive housing, mental health services or follow-up care, leaving major gaps in its response. “Portugal had politicians and thought leaders who recognized the issue and that the response wasn’t just to decriminalize, but also to provide increased support,” said Pauly.”

If you ever doubt the danger inherent in the waters of the Central and Northern Coast of B.C. (ie. “The Inside Passage”, Hecate Strait, Queen Charlotte Sound and Dixon Entrance) look no further than the experience of BC Ferries. Things happen. They lost a ship 20 years ago including two passengers.
And they just announced that this March they almost ran aground, with barely metres to spare!
Traverse the same dangerous areas enough, and one time, something will happen.
Update: The description of the incident also emphasizes the point that the weather is a major contributing factor to that danger.
“The Northern Adventure… hit bad weather, and deliberately changed course to navigate around the difficult conditions… the ship… sailed into an area of shallower water near Milbanke Sound, travelling "at its shallowest point over a shoal in approximately nine metres of water… the crew took quick "corrective measures" to veer back on course.”

i wonder if power from Site C and the various upgrades to other BC Hydro dams of the past few years is the reason why this fake Trump "emergency" order is neutered.
That and the massive rise of both home and grid scale solar and wind in Califonia and the PNW.

It's official! This Sunday will be the last "leap forward" in BC!
As of next November, the Vancouver time zone in British Columbia, Canada will be referred to as "Pacific Time" and will be -7GMT permanently. (same as Yukon Territory which did this 2 years ago)
The presser was pretty cute actually. They had kids with little clocks, and they danced.
I would have preferred staying at Standard Time, but this will be ok too. It's interesting that Premier Eby made a point of (gently, as there were kids) insisting the delay of 6 years since the overwhelming survey response from British Columbians to eliminate the time change was due to waiting for the US West Coast states to do the same.
Now, BC has decided to push, and to lead by example.

I'm off to bed while James continues! The backup transfer should complete by around 1AM, then the real migration and standup of the new server will take place.
If all goes super smooth, things might be up and running before I wake up around 8AM... or we might not. Fingers Crossed for smooth sailing and next updates in the morning!

Not a good look RCMP. But it sounds like in the main, they handled the situation ok even if they ran cover for a horrendous elected racist in Dallas Brodie.
Bravo to the people at UBC for making it clear that the agent-provocateur and hate-speech politician has no place, has no voice for her hateful rhetoric.
Residential school denialism *should* be a hate crime. The RCMP should be arresting Brodie, not protecting her hate propaganda tour.
Our Universities must be places of truth. Truths can be debated in context, but Brodie, like Charlie Kirk, isn't actually debating. No minds are going to be changed. No resolution found.
Dallas Brodie is only there to grab a headline and advance an extremist, regressive, and openly white supremacist agenda by advancing denialist views that dismiss truth and facts and calling it “anti-woke”.
