Inspired by elephant ears, new wall design could help buildings stay cool and cut energy use
Drawing inspiration from the venous ears of jackrabbits and elephants, Drexel University researchers have come up with a new approach to passive heating and cooling that could one day make buildings more energy efficient. Their concept, recently published in the Journal of Building Engineering, embeds a vascular network within cement-based building materials that, when filled with paraffin-based material, can help passively regulate the surface temperature of walls, floors and ceilings.

The tallest steel-framed building ever tested on an earthquake simulator started moving slowly, swaying and twisting. The 10-story, 100-foot structure was experiencing simulations of real earthquakes, including the 6.9 magnitude, 1989 Loma Prieta temblor, as part of an effort to determine if height limits for buildings made of cold-formed steel could be increased.

In the far distance there is a striking five story high building in two-point perspective on the side of a straight river-like body of water. The building is surrounded by trees on both sides. In the near frame are the rusted steel beams of a bridge, two small guardraials running horizontally near the bottom and vertical and diagonal beams attach to the arch that supports the bridge, most importantly the building is framed by a vertical and diagonal beam.

A huge clump of petunias mostly fills the lower left 1/4 of the frame, a similar clump can be seen further away and behind both of those a flagpole with an American and POW/MIA flag and a small historic brick building with a square footprint seen corner-on. Behind it all a blue sky with high-altitude clouds with power lines that don't quite meet at a 90 degree angle because I used a wide angle lens and I was looking up from the ground.
