Yesterday my wife and I had to pay for a small renovation which necessitated some budget shuffling. Needless to say we didn't make the list of the Richest Canadians. The McLeans and Canadian Business 2025 ranking saw lots of new names, which is surprising because $4.8B only earns you a spot at #40. Tech, primarily AI and data centre related, and cryptocurrency pushed some fortunes upwards, while the usual group of staid family wealth looked on with disdain. The saying "the rich gets richer" holds true as the combined net worth of the 10 wealthiest people on the list is $310 billion, a nearly 20% increase over 2024. It's difficult to read the individual summaries and not be disappointed at the level of wealth disparity with the bottom 50% of Canadians. IMO Governments avoid higher taxes on the wealthy because they believe Capitalism drives the economy, not the people who work for capitalists.

Louise Arbour is to be named Vice-Regal by Prime Minister Carney, replacing Mary Simon after her 5 year term.
I know Mary Simon attracted legitimate criticism for not being fluent in both official languages. But she was fluent in her own Indigenous language (Inuk), and that in itself was very powerful. She brought her lived experience as an Inuk elder and stateswoman from the remote Arctic shores of Québec to the highest office of the land. She did her job with honour and respect and I believe that is how she should be remembered.
I hope when the next Indigenous GG is appointed, that they are fluent in English, French and their own language... or even better... that it is less of a controversy because we are all more secure in our individualities within Canada.

Here in beautiful Belle Ewart the temp is -22°C, feeling like -31°C with the wind. But it's a dry cold....
Out west they are struggling with double digit temperatures on the plus side. Edmonton's winter festival organizers are making snow, protecting ice blocks and praying for plunging temps to save their skating rink. The unseasonable weather has impacted events throughput Alberta. The Banff and Lake Louise ice carving festival, Art of Ice, had to take down sculptures because they weren't safe. They were similarly impacted last year. The World’s Longest Hockey Game (WLHG) got underway last Thursday and players are dealing with slushy conditions while golf driving ranges are packed with eager duffers.

Today is National Toast Day, like you didn't have it circled on your fake holiday calendar. Canadians consume approximately 1.4 billion kilograms of #Bread annually which sounds like a lot until you compare us with Turkey where per capita consumption is almost 200 kilos annually. Bread consumption in Canada was down slightly in 2025, attributed to higher prices due to tariffs. But home baking and shopping at local bakeries all increased. Healthier bread options also increased their market share as customers opted for high-fibre ingredients and foods enriched with prebiotics, probiotics, postbiotics... and a bunch-of-other-otics. It may be good news that there are plenty of gut-friendly options available in the shape of whole grain and rich-in-fibre bakery products, but IMO a lot of them taste like cardboard. This past weekend we were in Toronto celebrating our granddaughter's 10th birthday (they grow up so fast...) and while consuming homemade cake we were discussing the recently completed #Olympics. The controversy in the #Curling competition came up and my son-in-law mentioned it was like another Broomgate.
I had forgotten about Broomgate which is understandable because I've watched about 8 minutes of curling in my 6 decades on the planet. Broomgate was a technological leap in the sport of curling that came to the attention of non-curlers, 99.9% of the world's population, during the 2015–16 season. New brush head technologies from a new company caused an uproar as sweepers gained far more control over a sliding chunk of granite. Traditionalists cried foul, or whatever they yell after tossing their stones. It resulted in a World Curling Federation summit to regulate and standardize brushes in the sport.

Most of us are celebrating a long weekend because of #FamilyDay, except Quebec and Newfoundland Labrador. Those two provinces will answer the phones while the rest of Canada is off gallivanting across the country. Family Day was first introduced by Don Getty, Premier of Alberta in 1990. Critics pointed out that he launched the new holiday to distract voters from the fact his son was in trouble with the law, accused of selling cocaine to an undercover narc in an Edmonton motel room. Whatever... we now get a break between January 1st and the May 24 long weekend.
It's a good day to look back on the past 30 years of marriage and family trends. Common-law unions are up while traditional marriages are down. Divorces, particularly among younger couples, has decreased, and we have more single parents today. There is no available data on the impact of Family Day on teenage sons selling illegal drugs.

The 18th river in our countdown is the Albany River, known to the Cree as Kistachowan, which flows northeast from Lake St. Joseph in Northwestern Ontario and empties into James Bay. It is 982 kilometres long, tying it with the Severn River for the title of longest river entirely in Ontario. Dropping 371 m along it's length, and draining a watershed of 135,200 km2, it is one of the most pristine rivers in Ontario and a draw for serious #Canoe and #Fishing enthusiasts. Albany River Provincial Park protects the headwaters and a only a limited number of lodges are allowed on the river, which is known for its Pike, Trout and Walleye fishing excursions.
The river was named after James, Duke of York and Albany, who later became King James II of England. The land north of the Albany River was part of the Northwest Territories until 1912, when it was transferred to Ontario in the Ontario Boundaries Extension Act, 1912.

We still have 20 rivers to highlight in this #CanadaRivers series and a couple of things stand out. We are now listing rivers that are close to 1,000 kms, and despite the size there are many I've never heard of. Add in several million lakes and you gotta agree that Canada is blessed with #Hydrology features.
The Thelon River, called Akilinik in Inuit, is #21 on our list and stretches 904 kms across northern Canada. Its source is Whitefish Lake in the Northwest Territories, and it flows east to Baker Lake in Nunavut, ultimately draining into Hudson Bay. It is fed by a watershed of 142,400 km2 but with a vertical drop of less than 400 metres over its length it is not suitable for hydroelectric development. The Thelon is one of the easiest tundra rivers to paddle, with a steady current, few rapids and no portages. It therefore is a destination for paddling vacations and tourists looking to experience Canada's north.

The Liard River is #15 on our #CanadaRivers countdown, and it flows through Yukon, British Columbia and the Northwest Territories. Rising in the Saint Cyr Range of the Pelly Mountains in southeastern Yukon, it flows 1,115 km southeast through British Columbia, marking the northern end of the Rocky Mountains and then curving northeast back into Yukon and Northwest Territories, draining into the Mackenzie River at Fort Simpson. The river drains approximately 277,100 km2 of boreal forest and muskeg. Marked by steep drops in the upper reaches, it has an average flow of 2,446 m3/s and has been studied extensively for future hydroelectric. There are no permanent settlements on the river although Indigenous people maintain summer camps and lodges.

Canada has stood for humanitarian law and international peace and security for nearly a century.
We should be a “Middle Power” with values. Right? Wasn’t that the Davos speech?!
But here we are clapping meekly from the sidelines as the country that would love to annex us, now ruled by a Christo-Fascist Regime, and in partnership with a Judeo-Fascist Regime blows up people in a country ruled by a Islamo-Fascist regime.
We are basically back to the Middle Ages but with nukes in our back pocket.
These are the three most dangerous countries in the world all fighting amongst themselves. We should not be taking sides, except for the side of peaceful civilians of all religions in all countries.

It's time for our first post in the #CanadaRivers series with #25 in our countdown. The Churchill River, in Atlantic Canada, flows for 856 km from Lake Melville into the Atlantic Ocean. It drains a watershed that covers 79,800 km/2 and has an average volume of 1,580 square metres per second.
The power development at Churchill Falls has backed up the river and created the enormous Smallwood Reservoir. Farther upstream, a hydroelectric plant at the outfall from Menihek Lakes provides power for the former iron-mining town of Schefferville, Québec. With a heavy flow and large drop from the Labrador Plateau, the river has probably the greatest hydroelectric potential of any in North America. The Churchill Falls Generating Station deserves it's own post as it is a massive 5,428 MW underground hydro power plant.
Don't get used to calling it the Churchill River as there are recent campaigns to return to its traditional native name.

The Severn River, #19 on our #CanadaRivers countdown, flows for 982 km, from Deer Lake near Kenora to Fort Severn on the shore of Hudson's Bay. It's the same length as the Albany River (next on our list) and both are the longest rivers entirely within Ontario. The Severn River drainage basin area is 102,800 km2 , a small portion of which is in Manitoba, and it has a modest volume of 645 m3/s as it meanders northeast. Historical records state that the mouth of the river was located by the English in 1631, but I'm pretty sure Indigenous people discovered it a few thousand years before that. Fort Severn was established as a trading post in 1689 by the Hudson's Bay Company but was captured by Pierre le Moyne, sieur d'Iberville in 1690. The post, rebuilt in 1759, has been in continuous operation to this day making this community one of the oldest European settlements in Ontario.

A few weeks ago our local #CBCradio host was interviewing an debt counselor, likely due to the arrival of Christmas credit card bills. The segment reinforced the data that Canadians carry high levels of debt, unfortunately among the highest percentage of income worldwide. Mortgage debt, according to ##StatsCan, is flat to slightly declining, likely because new home purchases by younger Canadians is down, but car loans, personal lines of credit, and credit card debt are all up in 2025.
Our government continues to try and respond by offering tax credits and supplemental payments which invariably get sucked up by corporations. They have to change the game - build public housing or invest in leasehold or cooperative homes, build public options for utilities, internet, food or other necessities. Invest heavily in public transit and subsidize it so that it's low cost or free. Remove corporate profits from necessities.

Today is a twofer of #CanadaRivers as we countdown the longest rivers in Canada.
#23 is the Red River which flows for 890 km, originating at the confluence of the Bois de Sioux and Otter Tail rivers between the U.S. states of Minnesota and North Dakota, flowing northward through the Red River Valley and continuing into Manitoba. It empties into Lake Winnipeg, whose waters join the Nelson River and ultimately flow into Hudson Bay. The river only falls 70 metres over it's length, so there are no hydroelectric opportunities, but because it drains a large watershed of 287,500 km2 it experiences significant spring volumes. This has led to calamitous (love that word) floods plaguing southern Manitoba for centuries. Flood canals and ice cutting (physical removal of large blocks every spring) have mitigated the risks but not eliminated them.

#20 on our countdown of #CanadaRivers is the Back River, which flows for 974km across NWT and Nunavut. It drains an area of 106,500 km2, flowing from Contwoyto Lake north of Great Slave Lake, NWT, northeast across the Barren Lands of Nunavut to Chantrey Inlet in the Arctic. The river is named for Sir George Back, who first explored it in 1834. The original name was Thlew-ee-choh, likely Dogrib for "great fish river." It has a vertical drop of just over 380m over it's length with 83 rapids challenging serious canoists and kayakers. The British film, Beacon Six, was televised by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, showing the rugged landscape during a 1962 canoe expedition.
From 1963–1965, anthropologist Jean Briggs did field research with the Utkusiksalinmiut Inuit living at the opening of Back River and Chantrey Inlet, resulting in her work Never in Anger, as well as helping to compile an Utkuhiksalik dictionary.

Canadian inventors have vastly improved every day life. Consider the innovations that global citizens are now thankful for: the telephone, basketball, snowmobiles, Imax movies, hockey, canoes, bras, insulin, zippers, paint rollers, athletic support, and poutine. Sorry we're so awesome.
Now an invention by a Dartmouth emergency physician in 2022 has made it easier for emergency rooms to safely remove rings from fingers. Previously doctors and nurses would have relied on tools from hardware stores with all the scary moments a patient could experience. "You might want to look away while I do this...". A serendipitous meeting at a medical tradeshow will likely give the invention an added boost.

#HappyBirthday to Loreena McKennitt, born OTD in 1957 in Morden Manitoba. In her small town she sang in a choir and studied classical piano and voice. In 1975, she moved to Winnipeg to study veterinary science, but before graduating, she discovered a passion for Celtic music and soon found herself performing in Winnipeg clubs. McKennitt pursued a decades-long quest of discovery into the music and nomadic history of the Celts. Relocating to Stratford, Ontario in 1981, she appeared as an actress, singer, and composer for the Stratford Festival. After learning to play the troubadour harp, in 1985 she embarked on a solo and self-managed music career. She founded her Quinlan Road label and financed her Irish-based debut recording, “Elemental,” by busking in Toronto. After some early success she negotiated a distribution deal with Warner Brothers and became more widely known.

Now anyone with a proveable ancestral connection to Canada can apply, not just one generation back! This is even better than Spain “Historical Memory" changes that are now slowly expiring!
"“In January 2025, we had 32 requests for certified copies of vital records and this year in January 2026, we've had over 1,000,” she said, adding most of those requests were made by Americans.”

It was good, last year, when we booed the heck out of the US National Anthem. I think everyone understood what exactly people were booing. It wasn't the citizens or our many friends and family in the USA, it was the person driving us apart.
So this beautiful singing of the Canadian anthem by Buffalo fans this week before a game that didn't even feature a Canadian team is special, because it's Americans saying they still love and respect us, their friends.
The feeling is mutual.
Miss you, Americans.

We in Canada have a poor record when it comes to looking after our own history, colonial or otherwise. 24 Sussex should be restored and renovated for use by all Canadian Prime Ministers.

How many times do these situations have to happen before government stops hanging out at the the lobbyist's cocktail party and actually does its job regulating companies and protecting citizens?
“If the airline is unable to re-book a passenger on its own or partner airlines departing within 48 hours of the original departure time, they have to buy the passenger’s seat ticket on the next available flight of any carrier. And that means including competitors. That’s what the law says, that’s what WestJet has to do. The problem is that WestJet is flouting the law. WestJet treats the law as if it was just friendly recommendations.”

“Gale said in his resignation letter Wednesday that "a member of the communist party circulated a dated document" that showed he owned a "historical book," and that he was a target for some people when he undertook the work to begin "fixing the issues" at the Region.”
If he talks like a Nazi…and owns The Nazi Book... he's probably a Nazi.

It is frustrating every single time that I see the popular votes versus seats won in Canadian elections.
Especially when you have a party like the Bloc Quebécois who run only in Québec, pull 1.2 million votes in that province, and receive 22 seats in the House, yet the NDP pulls 1.2 million across Canada and gets 7 seats.
All our system does is reward density, rather than delivering actual representation.
But someone please tell me how 'ranked ballots' will fix this*

““The reason that we want to help spread the word is two-fold,” said Amy Miller.
“People are interested in coming here to work in health care. Obviously, we’re so grateful to be here. But I want the community here to know that it’s working and to continue with that momentum. And I want to let people in the States know that this is an option, that it’s a real option.”

very glad we have Jeremy Hansen on the Artemis II mission. He is a wonderful representative for Canada. Just had some really great words of wisdom for a young First Nations boy which boiled down to listening to the wisdom of his elders and the benefit of their perspective in the world.
It really does seem like a great batch of humans up there.
