I know Mary Simon attracted legitimate criticism for not being fluent in both official languages. But she was fluent in her own Indigenous language (Inuk), and that in itself was very powerful. She brought her lived experience as an Inuk elder and stateswoman from the remote Arctic shores of Québec to the highest office of the land. She did her job with honour and respect and I believe that is how she should be remembered.
I hope when the next Indigenous GG is appointed, that they are fluent in English, French and their own language... or even better... that it is less of a controversy because we are all more secure in our individualities within Canada.

The only part of this tournament that I think has been a little unfair for Canada as a co-host is having to play outside of Canadian soil.
We should have had the advantage of home field as other hosts have before this shared hosting situation at least for the Group and Round of 32/16 games. A third city could have hosted to make it happen.

BC's strategy was doomed to fail because, like nearly every government program in BC and Canada, there is a deep reluctance to increase spending and taxation to create actual capacity and capability in government.
The BC Government thought they could just decriminalize a few drugs and maybe put in some ‘targeted' funding here and there that would eventually shift to the private or charity sector.
It was never going to work. This was not a failure of the Portugal method in BC, it was an unwillingness to actually implement everything Portugal did to have success.
"Portugal’s drug strategy paired decriminalization with a massive, coordinated investment in treatment, housing, and social support, whereas B.C.’s decriminalization came without enough detox beds, long-term treatment, supportive housing, mental health services or follow-up care, leaving major gaps in its response. “Portugal had politicians and thought leaders who recognized the issue and that the response wasn’t just to decriminalize, but also to provide increased support,” said Pauly.”

I have a problem with the House of Commons floor crossers, as I think most people do.
But I havent been able to come up with a more palatable alternative or at least a different scenario.
The biggest problem, for me, is the act of poaching. The trickle of MPs.
It gives the impression, falsely or not, that these people needed just a little more time, a little more convincing, a little more... ? to eventually turn on their constituent's choice of party.
What would be more pallatable? How about a group? Rather than a trickle.
People tallk, it is naïve to think it isn't known between individuals who may be thinking of leaving or switching parties.
So if there is more than one with that thought I think it would be better for our democracy if those MPs banded together and made their concerns known privately in their caucus first, then if nothing changes, they communicate to others including the public, and make it clear this is something that could happen en masse.
Then at least it takes away the transactional nature of it and frames it more as a democratic choice, informed by whatever situation is happening and done for the benefit of constituents and Canadians.
How does this change get made? Unfortunately that's the hard part. It would be hard or maybe inappropriate to "legislate".
It would need to be an expectation, a habit, a "norm".
It could happen. Though today, politicians following "norms" seems to be a little out of vogue.

Lost a bit in the hubbub about Labour losing massively to the Reform UK is this little tidbit:
Wales is using a new proportional representation model!
There are 96 seats in the devolved parliament (Senedd).
There are 16 new constituencies created with six members each.
The 96 seats are allocated by share of the votes for a party, or by votes for an independent candidate.
Scotland already uses a mixed Constituency and Regional member system to get proportional representation in their parliament.
In England these votes are purely municipal/council/mayoral races. I'm not sure if they're proportional, ranked FPTP, or what.
And yet here we are in Canada, too afraid to change to a more democratic system.

This is how far behind and how much of a disadvantage Canadians are at right now domestically.
Walk into Canadian Tire and you can by a 500W "kit” of 4 125W solar panels from $1199. That works out to $2.40 per Watt.
Or, you can go on Alibaba as I just did... search for 400W solar, chat with a (AI Bot probably?) and be offered 36 620 watt "JinkoSolar" panels for $US 2500 plus $3000 shipping which works out to ‎$8,510.88 CAD or $0.38 per Watt.
Our governments and business communities are completely failing us. We are getting fleeced.
Granted I don't know if there would be import duties, but FGS the price difference is totally ridiculous.

Anyone know of this is accurate?
I have been told in the past that one big thing tying Canada to continuing, and expanding, oil production is because of terms in NAFTA (now USMCA) that essentially say every drop of oil must continue until the customer deems otherwise.
If Trump has essentially broken large parts of CUSMA AND has said openly he believes it should end then…
Outside of its own needs, is Canada under any obligation to continue exporting/importing oil and gas products to/from the USA?
Could the end of CUSMA give Canadian climate activists the first real chance to push for reductions in absolute fossil fuel production and a true transition for fossil fuel workers in the industry!?

I am glad that the Qatar player, Assim Madibo, who broke Koné’s leg, sought out Kone immediately in the dressing room to apologize before Kone was taken to hospital.
He seemed genuinely distraught and upset after the tackle.
Some of the people on the Qatar bench need a good slap for their reactions... but on the whole, Madibo reacted in the right way, and that goes a long way to making what happened truly a tragic accident that can happen at any time in professional sports.
I wish Madibo well, and I hope Koné's recovery can be as quick, and complete as possible over the next few months.
And of course, I hope this gives Canada at least some added motivation and drive to get to the knockout stage and really make some noise in this thing!
