“Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe.””

It's absurd to think you know what people think in the country as a whole because you've spoken to a lot of people when canvasing. No-one can talk to enough people in enough places to get a real idea. And yet politicians consistently say, "when I speak to people, what they say is...." And, of course, they are more likely to remember those who agree with them and dismiss those who don't!

Anxiety particles float about looking for things to attach to. Immigration is a magnet for general anxiety. That's why populists win. But immigration is not really a problem. Sadly the country may not realise this till it's too late.
(Vince Cable has just made the point that there is no immigration problem in Sunderland or Blyth)

In 1979 my father-in-law Tom Norcross went to Hong Kong with his family to coach fencing. He was there for 15 years. Part of the brief was to set up a self-sustaining fencing programme. Unlike other expat coaches, he learned Cantonese and grew the talent of local coaches as well as fencers.
My wife's family are proud that he contributed a small part in the success of Hong Kong's recent fencing gold.

It warms my heart any time I find something like this in other people's code. 😀 Been there. Frequently.

One thing governments who are too afraid to ban X, even temporarily, should consider, is the robustness of systems that rely on it. It should be possible for things to continue, albeit less efficiently for a short period, without a specific social media platform. With that in mind, it would be prudent, and send an important message to social media owners, to stress test by turning off X for scheduled days and weeks, so that the country asserts democratic independence from foreign billionaires.
