My second #ClimateDiary post:
Water butts all empty, as of last night. We carried dozens of watering cans full of water, both for the containers, and for the first time, for plants growing in our sandy soil, which were beginning to suffer. And of course, all the washing up water goes on the garden too.

🚨new publication alert🚨
Some types of El Niño lead to more melt over the Ross Ice Shelf in #Antarctica.
In our paper led by PhD student Sanjiban Dutta, we look at the synoptic relationship where Eastern Pacific El Niños channel warm moist air over the Ross Ice Shelf. One to watch with the current #ElNino building..

We are picking our grapes because they are ready 4 weeks early.
They are usually still green at this time.

Never thought I'd say this, but it's actually too hot to hike in Scotland just now. We are suffering from the heat. Not complaining but genuinely surprised. #ClimateDiary

Bed sheets on the french windows, in addition to/despite having tree shading for a good part of the day. Ordering some persianas alicantinas, external wooden roller blinds, as this isn't going to get better.
Opened windows in the evening but the result was bedrooms had smoky air from the moorland fires, exacerbated by inversion layer. and wind direction.

I don't normally use the tag #ClimateDiary but it's worth mentioning that in South Manchester it stinks of smoke - moorland fires above Oldham brought by a strong ENE wind.
We last had this before the pandemic.

Wildlife getting hungry.
Looked out of the window to see an emaciated squirrel eating one of my half ripe outdoor tomatoes
It's never happened before; never before had to net them.

It began to rain at last yesterday evening.
Nipped to breathe in the unmistakable smell of rain after dry weather.
Nothing. Just a bit of a mouldy smell.
