Literally the only cloud in the sky at eclipse time here was where the sun was. but this was not a bad shot and the pinhole worked well!

I was also out watching the partial #eclipse here. Yeah, I like our place. I guess it could be worse.

Walked over to #Manchester 's Heaton Park to get a good view of the #eclipse (actually it wasn't as low on the horizon as I expected). The gulls on top of the hall got the best view! The park was absolutely rammed, never got a chance to find the astronomy club there.
Hello Fedi lazyweb.
There will be a solar eclipse on August 12th (only partial in the UK) and I was wondering how to take photos of it.
A quick web search indicates that pointing a camera directly at the sun can be just as quick to burn out digital sensors as it is to burn out human retinas. And I don't want to do either!
I have some ISO-certified eclipse glasses for my eyes, does anyone have any suggestions for how to protect a camera lens (either a physical digital camera or a smartphone camera).
Thanks!

The #eclipse in Munich wasn’t a total one and it happened close to sunset. The weirdest thing was when the sun was just behind some trees but the sky‘s brightness was way lower than usual at that moment.
And the colander trick works.
Not too late to build a pin hole camera with whatever you have lying around. The greater the distance from the pin to the projecting surface, the larger the image…

Wow, the skies are all cloudy, dark, and miserable over Northern Ireland right now. Business as usual.

A gaggle of older ladies has assembled at the cliffside that overlooks Wick harbour, and gotten all their gear out " to watch the eclipse".
At 18:32 it will have started, but the sun is behind some thin clouds at the horizon, so you can't see anything.

Aparte de las gafas, estoy pensando fabricar una caja oscura, o estenopeica, para observar el #eclipse. ¿Alguien tiene un enlace con instrucciones que le haya sido útil en el pasado?
ECLIPSE FAIL
Looking at my timeline I see "positive publication bias": judging by the photos, one would think that everybody has seen the eclipse, but that's because only people who saw it have pictures to upload.
But don't fret, because it is I the one who will fight this bias, one failure at a time, by sharing that I climbed onto my roof, put my eclipse glasses on... only for the sun to hide behind that building one minute before the ring was formed.

Anyone remember the good old times, when a solar eclipse was the harbinger of calamity? The messenger of our current schemes being headed for disaster?
Ok never mind, carry on.

Yes, this is it: one of the 2 million #EclipseGlasses distributed for free by the Spanish government (see https://www.ciencia.gob.es/Noticias/2026/julio/Gobierno-ONCE-gafas-eclipse.html for the announcement and e.g. https://nachrichten.es/sonnenfinsternis-am-12-august-spanien-verschenkt-2-millionen-eclipse-brillen-hier-koennen-sie-sich-kostenlos-eine-sichern/ for news coverage) - we got ours at https://lafabricadeluz.org in Ponferrada where they are bundled with tickets to the museum ... which we had initially visited only for the glasses (paired here with a popular beer) but which turned out to be super-interesting.
Found a fairly nice spot. Street bench where the sun was doing down between the buildings.
Didn't really get noticeably dark but saw the crescent shadows between the tree leaves and my eyes though the filters saw the moon block the sun better than the camera managed to see.
Here's my pathetic contribution to what I assume is the most photographed English Eclipse until the next one probably years away.
Many people on the street with no glasses or filters. Loaned mine out a fair bit. Don't think I have blinded anyone.

While watching the #eclipse I was mostly thinking "ooh, pretty" but I did manage to squeeze a slightly more profound thought out (based upon that Iain M Banks snippet that was doing the Fedi rounds yesterday).
Given that it's probably quite rare for a planet's satellite and star to have exactly the same visible dimensions, it occurred to me that even if there are other sentient beings scattered through our galaxy, we may be the only ones that have ever gazed upon and marvelled at a solar eclipse.

Some light clouds came over about 10 minutes before the #eclipse was at its fullest. Which actually worked in our favour as it meant even my crappy old phone with its crappy old camera could get a picture through the clouds.

We are up on Helsby Hill, looking out westwards over the Mersey mudflats and north Cheshire's vast miles of oil refineries.
It may not be the most beautiful vista ever, but we have a glorious unimpeded view of the slowly descending sun. Now we're just waiting for the moon to do its thing.
